Reflective Essay: Prejudice And Discrimination

Improved Essays
For this discussion, I am going to stretch the thought behind it a bit, meaning the history I am going to discuss will include the last eleven months. For a little background, I am white/Caucasian and so is my husband, and in turn our two children, to be honest my husband and I are made up of seven different nationalities that we are aware of, it could be more, English, Prussian, German, Greek, Irish, Scottish, and French, but I guess all considered white. One of my son’s best friends is Mexican, that being said he is at our house often, did I mention my son is 21, these are not children. My son is in the military and his friend is in college completing his degree in criminal justice and is applying for the Joliet Police Department. He does not dress or act in a way that you would think could warrant discriminatory behavior, however on multiple occasions I have witnessed prejudice and discrimination. For instance, we were at a family restaurant, here in Joliet, following the hostess to the table, he was in the middle of the line, that included myself, husband, son daughter, and another friend, all of us white except him, and a middle aged man passing us nudged him and said “move spic”. At first I thought I must have misheard, when I realized I didn’t, I was appalled, and angry and to be honest I would have liked to smack the guy across the face. However, what was worse than the act itself, was his reaction, when we sat down, he just said “it’s not a big deal, it happens all the time, I just don’t let it bother me anymore”. …show more content…

Throughout history, the United States has always been in conflict over the subject of race and racism. Although, the United States in reality is supposed to be free and united as the country name says it is, however that is not the case as it stands now. Racism has been around for a while and no one has said a thing, until a group of brave people, The United States Constitution, and Henry Luce present their sides about the truth about race and racism. To begin with, in an article written in The New York Times by Geeta Gandbhir and Michéle Stephenson, they write about how Asians are experiencing being stereotyped by the public. It is for some people that Asians are considered to be a “model minority” and superior to the other races.…

Stereotypes have the power to influence our own personal experiences and how we interact with others. I identify as Latino, more specifically, I identify as Chicano Latino.…

It is insulting to be considered incapable of being as good as someone else without an illness. This happens particularly in the workplace, where jobs are not given due to the “unreliability” of mentally ill people. Most employers do not take the time to comprehend a possible candidate for a job with a mental illness, so they end up missing out on opportunities. This leads to ill persons rejecting the thought of being officially diagnosed. Stigma and discrimination can trap people in a cycle of illness.…

After handling different kinds of work, including being a private nurse assistant and, currently, a human resource coordinator, I have to admit that I have had my share of expressing prejudice and discrimination. At the same time, as a woman and a member of the minority, I had been a victim of discrimination as well at work and social settings. I was born in the Dominican Republic and raised by Catholics, although I am not a practicing Catholic but a believer of a higher being. My culture influenced my identity and experiences. Culture, specifically the sexual division of labor and racist beliefs, have affected my perceptions as an employee and how I was treated in society; moreover, realizing my own biases has me to change myself and challenge…
