“If I were rain, that joins sky and earth that otherwise never touch, could I join two hearts as well?”(Kubo, goodreads) Rain can symbolize cleansing, often it seems that walking through rain when one is sad or pensive can help clear one's mind and help sorrows (symbolically) be washed away. This catharsis occurs often, because, firstly one feels a literal welcoming cooling on their body, but also a metaphorical washing away of problems, as well as a feeling of hitting rock bottom, a feeling which can inspire people to rise up again. This once again, re-confirms the symbolic meaning of re-birth in rain. In the movie Hoodlum, rain acts as a symbol of forgiveness and redemption, in the movie there is a gang war where a lot of young and innocent people were killed, so the rain metaphorically cleans Bumpy Johnson’s hands from blood and gives a new life to him. Rain has a lot of importance throughout books and movies around the world. In Jodi Picoult’s novel My Sister’s Keeper, rain is emanate throughout the story, but to the characters Campbell, Jesse, Anna and Brian, rain is more than just a weather pattern; it symbolizes life, renewal and happiness. We experience the reality that the same inanimate agent can render both life and death. This concept is evident in Scripture as rain, which is initially given by God to engender new life, also became a means of judgment, as seen in Genesis 7:4: the description of the flood. In this case rain itself was the direct cause of death and devastation. This is where Anna and Kate come in. The day that Anna died it had been raining, and throughout the book the family of Kate was devastated, with what the outcome might be, will Kate die, or will she make it through, rain had an effect throughout the book, and it didn’t even have to be
