My Sister's Keeper Character Analysis Essay

Even though Kate Fitzgerald is the one that’s sick in her family, the nuclear family has two other kids: Anna and Jesse. While there are several point of views throughout the story of My Sister’s Keeper, Anna is without a doubt the main character. Anna is a 13-year old girl who lives in Providence, Rhode Island. She has always served as the donor for her sister, Kate. Anna issues a lawsuit against her parents for medical emancipation and she hires Campbell Alexander to be her attorney. One of the main characteristics we see in Anna is that she wants to be able to be given a choice. This is exemplified at the hearing for her case when Campbell argues “This case isn’t about Anna donating a kidney. When his sister has cancer and the other sister is important to save the other one’s life, Jesse does not stand out in the family. The fact that Jesse is not often mentioned throughout the story thoroughly supports that he really wants attention from his family and no one pays attention to him. As a response to the neglect towards him, he often acts out and is very blunt towards his parents. We know that Brian, the father of the family, is a firefighter. Jesse is an arsonist and a pyromaniac, often setting buildings on fire in hopes of his dad noticing the ideals. After Brian confronts Jesse about his pyromania and how he hopes to end it completely, we see Jesse completely come to an ease afterward. After Jesse and his father embrace, Brian says, “Jesse’s breathing evens against me, like it used to when he was so small, when I used to carry him upstairs after he’d fallen asleep in my lap.” This signifies how a simple sign of affection is all he really needed to end his behaviors. In the end of it all, Jesse shows change when he graduates from a police
