My Experience For Community Service

Decent Essays
For my service learning assignment, I wanted to do something that is challenging, yet engaging in which I can contribute to the community. Lucky, I got the chance to volunteer for Immunize Nevada, a nonprofit organization that provokes the importance of vaccination. The volunteer experience that I gained from this organization was definitely something I did not expect, but was a valuable contribution on my part. First started in 1995, the organization was formed by the Washoe County District Health Department to increase immunization rates in children aged from zero to two. In 2010, the organization was changed to its modern name to better reflect the mission and to be consistent with the statewide coalition across the nation. Expanded …show more content…
During my first internship experience in Summer 2014, my team and I planned a civil engagement project for a small neighborhood with families who financially needs help. The event was a success and everyone who participated enjoyed their time. With many different types of artistic activities and a chance for the children to get creative by using their imaginations, their parents couldn’t be more thankful for what we have done. Because of the impacts that these actions has on people’s lives, I want to do something similar at a college level. Personally, I had a great time with Immunize Nevada at the sites that I have volunteered at. I got the chance to worked at the booth in community events and in the office by preparing paper works to be mail out to the community educators. My favorite activity would be working at the booths and communicating with the visitors about immunizations. Usually, I would work with other volunteers and we would take turns with the speaking and playing games with the children to earn small prizes. Although doing the paper works wasn’t as bad as the other experiences I had with paper works, it was my least favorite duty. The best feeling about giving my time to the organization would be when the staff members smile at me and appreciate my help at the end of my shift. Personally, I have an interest in studying human diseases and how impactful they are to a human’s health; which explains why I chose Molecular Microbiology and Immunology as my major. Because this organization focuses on diseases and immunization, I got to learn some of the most common ones through flyers and handouts at the booths while discussing them with the staffs during the events. With the knowledge and skills I will have by the time I received my medical license, I want to provide advices for parents of young children on how to teach themselves and their children on how to stay healthy and live a disease-free life. In order to do, my communication skills need to be clear to be understood by people who I talk to. During the service learning experiment, I got the chance to do some communication with people, which increased my confidence in speaking more. If medical professional does not work out, then I want to become a medical researcher and analyze bacterias and virus that cause disease in humans. Reflecting back at my service learning experience, I did find the information that I was working with to be very interesting and meaningful to my

One of the most remarkable volunteer experiences that I have ever had a chance to participate in was a PULSE program held by Cooper Medical School. This premedical summer program was crucial to my understanding of human health and it afforded me with a totally new perspective on my future career as a physician: a desire to practice in an underserved area because I had a chance to witness the degree to which some citizens are in need of proper medical care and yet most of them have nowhere to go due to the lack of primary care offices in the area. PULSE program was concentrated on service learning as one of the primordial sources in understanding the community in which Cooper Medical School is located and the health trends of its residents. This information could be of much value for physicians who practice in the area because it allows…

Volunteering at Veterans Affairs Medical Center was one of the greatest experience I've ever had. Sitting down with the elderly and getting to know them, I noticed if more teens could actually sit down and take the time to talk to an elderly person they could gain an opulent amount of knowledge. Sitting down and getting to talk an innumerable amount of veterans as I could, I was intrigued by how each person had a story of their own going through WWII. Voluntarily, I was able to contribute to the organization by having open conversations with the veterans, providing beverages, and having a great time. It wasn't till the end of the program when my perception began to change about the organization I volunteered for, it's more than just about kids…

It was a balmy ten o’clock on a Saturday morning in June; the thick air around the Humane Society smelled vaguely of livestock. Stepping into the air-conditioned chill of the shelter, I took a breath, signed in to the volunteer portal, and took my place at the front desk. On this particular day the first people waiting were an older couple, and my heart sank when I saw them. The husband had a bundle in his arms, something wrapped in an old comforter, and I had worked the front desk long enough to know what that meant. Sure enough, as they approached, the blanket shifted and I saw, as I knew I would, the white muzzle and emaciated face of a dog in the decrepit last stages of old age.…

I thought I had a pretty good knowledge of the issues occurring around me, but after going to these events and listening to the class lecture, I have found there is a lot for me to learn from to have a greater understanding of what is going on around me.
