Your senior year of high school can be extremely stressful, from keeping up with class assignments to preparing for the next immense phase of your life, college. Preparation for college comes with a lot of important decisions. Deciding where you want to attend and how you’re going to finance the cost, are only a couple of questions that have to be answered. All of this can be tremendously difficult and overwhelming to students who have no clue where to start. Ms. Phoebe Smith set out to make a change in this. She is the co-founder and president of the Graduation Incentive for Teenagers program. It helps high school seniors thoroughly prepare for the next chapter of their life. I sat down with Ms. Smith in the kitchen of her home. I took the very same seat I have for countless weekends since I am a participant of the G.I.F.T. program myself. I asked my interviewee what is the mission of the program and what is her motivation. The goal of the program is to help students choose the best college and career choice for them individually. Also, the mission is to make sure the student attends college expecting little to no debt. She assists local seniors with college applications, scholarship applications, ACT prep and acquiring grants and other financial aid opportunities. Ms. Smith accompanies students on college visits.
