My Senior Project Essay

Improved Essays
My senior project is about how music affects the brain in a positive matter especially those that have diseases. I chose this project because I listen to music all the time, it became a part of my life. My idea for service learning was to see how music affects people that have dementia. My mentors were Amadee Castenell, Laetitia Brundage and Alison Albino. I spent ten hours observing them on what they did and how the residents of the homes that they went to reacted to the music and activities that the music therapists did. I had a great time while I was observing because many of the residents moods, improved significantly because of the music. My favorite song was a “Bushel and Peck” because it seemed to get the most out of all the reminders …show more content…
Writing the paper was hard because I had lot to say but I did not know how to translate it onto the paper. One major problem about my project is that i could not find a mentor who could help me because many of the labs were full, and did not want to take me because they did not want to exceed the amount of assistants in the lab. The way I managed time is I always did something extra on the day to get work done for my senior project so that on days when I did not have a sufficient amount of homework I would work on senior project. That's what I did for everything as I learned how to balance working, school and playing sports. Doing a project, with this magnitude I learned that it is very important to work with the people’s schedule especially my mentors, as they have a busy schedule and many places to go to and work. Being able to work with my mentors was very easy as they wanted to help me with anything that I needed. My original goals were not completed as I had to change many of them. My new goals was to show that music is very essential to lives with people of dementia. My goals changed because my original idea for the service learning part was not able to be completed since I did not find a mentor with the expertise I

The area of my topic for my Capstone Project is the environment and the United States should stop the production of the North Dakota Access Pipeline. The pipeline is 1,172 miles long and it will transport 470,000 barrels of oil per day. The pipeline will begin in North Dakota, travel through South Dakota, and Iowa, and end in central Illinois. The pipeline will be placed through the Standing Rock Sioux land, which is in North Dakota, and the pipeline would affect their only water supply if the pipeline spills. I chose this area because the media doesn't show what is happening in North Dakota and I want people to be informed about what is going on in our country and stand with Standing Rock to end this battle.…

Mari Tervaniemi examines the benefits of music in learning through many instances of life to illustrate the possibilities for music used in rehabilitation or to further enhance individuals of any age, with or without special needs. Tervaniemi touches on both the effects of listening to music to learning how to play and read music. These effects can appear as early as infancy as studies have shown that auditory learning begins in the womb and as a result can positively affect a baby’s brain response. Phonological skills that help with reading and writing are also further influenced by music. Furthermore, Tervaniemi explains that neuronal decline is slower in those with prior music practice and hobbies that involve auditory and cognitive functions.…

The journey of Dan Cohen, as he tries to bring the joy of music to as many people as he can, is recorded by the talented Michael Rossato-Bennett, who travels with him since the first day they met. Dan goes to different Nursing Homes to try and help elders remember who they once were and become one with themselves again. “Alive Inside” allows the audience to have an insight into the lives of Nursing Homes. The entire documentary is based on Dan Cohen, a social worker, who began a new organization called Music and Memory. When watching the documentary, I constantly compared the techniques used in the nursing homes to those discussed in class. In class, we discussed the elderly and Geriatrics. The lectures dealt with elderly who had neurological disorders like: Depression, Alzheimer’s, Dementia, Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder, etc.…

Music has the power to transporting us back to a particular experience, memory, or era without that being its intended purpose. The documentary, Alive Inside, provided a look into how the brain’s reaction to music for nursing home residents with dementia provided an alternative therapy by allowing them to temporarily regain the memories and movement of their younger years. At the suggestion of Dan Cohen, social worker, nursing home volunteer and non-profit organizer of Music & Memory, the film’s director followed him for a day and what he discovered that day of the extent of influence that music had on these individuals, he decided to continue to follow Cohen for three years to document the phenomenal effects that this type of therapy. It was an extremely easy choice for me when we were told to pick our topic for the senior project. I immediately decided that I wanted to focus on the injustice that the elderly have been experiencing for quite some time now concerning depression and other mental illnesses. Researching and studying the causes and effects that elderly depression can have has truly been an eye opening experience. It has been fascinating seeing why psychologists and therapists have generally been glazing over the growing problem that is elderly depression. My path for this project has been a relatively smooth one.…

    9th Grade Research Paper

Although every grade level deems difficult, I believe that 9th grade is the hardest grade because of the grueling effects of low self-esteem, pressure and worry that every student must bear among the already heavy load of their school frets during freshman year. To begin with, low self-esteem can truly deprive a student’s drive to excel in the future. I think this because occasionally, when a student is held back a grade during their first year, they can suffer from a sort of mental inhibition, and feel as if they are an outcast stranded in a see of anonymous strangers. Therefore, that student could feel as if they are unwelcome and decide that it’s better off if they just drop out instead of dealing with the uncertainty of a different crowd.…

To be honest, writing this paper felt a little like writing an eulogy. I often found myself frustratedly typing extra hard on the keyboard telling myself that I will never write another paper and this is the last long paper I will write because I am not taking anymore English classes. Of course, I quickly overcame my laziness and kept writing because I want to be successful and a major key to success is to being able to write. The most challenging part of this paper was the outlines that were back to back every night. The week where we had to write and turn in our outlines for our paper, was a hard week for me so I never go to do the quality job on my outlines which of course affected my entire paper.…
