Reflection On Self Study

Improved Essays
The video that I chose to observe for my self-study was a video of myself teaching the students about interruptions in the classroom. My objective in this lesson was to teach the students how to be respectful listeners and how to use their self-control to stop them from interrupting others. To help in guiding my self-study, I will be using a rubric from the Framework for Teaching (Danielson Group), which consists of four different domains; planning and preparation, classroom environment, instruction, and professional responsibilities.
Domain 1: Planning and Preparation After observing the video, I scored myself a four in 1c: setting instructional outcomes (most outcomes represent rigorous and important learning in the discipline.) In this

It was to teach the students how to be respectful listeners and how to use their self-control to stop them from interrupting others. At least 85% of the students will be able to remember not to erupt during a lesson or with a classmate. I scored myself a three also because I don’t believe I’m at a distinguished level. There is still room for improvement. In addition, I scored myself a three in 4a: reflecting on teaching (teacher makers general suggestions about how a lesson could be improved.). The implementation of this lesson would be at the beginning of the year. I believe that this is part of classroom management. I would like for the students to be respectful and mindful of what others in the classroom are saying. Some other things that need improvement would be my vocabulary with the usage of the statement ‘you guys’. I need to break that habit and use ‘class’ or ‘boys and girls’. Also, I would change the time limit on the writing portion of the lesson, 10 minutes is too much. I started to notice that the students were focused more on the timer on the whiteboard than the task. I would minimize the time to five minutes or just had the students all sit in a circle, and one by one they could say one thing that they learned about interruptions and that they will change in class that would have been

    1. How did you analyze your students? My class as a whole seems to understand the term greater/ more than, less than an equal too. Also, I believe the last topic was a little too long to follow with no activity or questions. What surprised me was how kind and willing to make the sentence were most of the students, for the ones that had more than one language background was a little bit easier, others asked for help and that was fine. I was impressed that Faith did the sentence all by herself looking at the grammar wall and the copies in her portfolio, and then asked if it was ok, and she did great! I wanted to ask some questions, after the sentences, to everyone, but it seemed that it got snitched out of my hands by that point, maybe it took too long and I was taking time from my partners.…

Not only did all of the interruptions occur, but I had the math tutor in my classroom pulling students to work with and a new push in began that morning. This push in is much larger than the group that comes in during the Science/Social Studies time. I am certain that my classroom was filled to capacity during the short time frame I was observed. Even with all of this happening in the classroom my students behaved perfectly since they have been taught how to respond when there are interruptions during our lessons. The students were on task and participated like they always do.…

The passage was given to me by Ms. Halsey and was intended for the student to work on fluency and comprehension. I took that passage and stayed with fluency and comprehension, but I also added in learning strategies for difficult vocabulary terms that are in the passage. Pre-Assessment: The student will read the Susan B. Anthony article in one minute. The teacher will high-light each of the words that were incorrect in that one minute and add up how many words the student read correctly.…

First, when analyzing the data and identifying instructional goals, teachers should only focus on a few goals. This was surprising to me because I have usually been told to do what it takes to raise the scores. Raising the scores is a big task, but looking at the data and identifying a few small goals is not as overwhelming. When you can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel, it could cause you to give up. McLeod’s reference to Confucius’s quote about “a journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step” (2005), made me realize how important it is to focus on what you can do and change.…

I was assigned to work together with Lisa Adamson and Katie Doherty. My group and I were in charge to teach chapter eight sections four and five. Chapter eight section four was about functions, and chapter eight section five is about coordinate system. Surprisingly, our group previously taught a lesson of a fifth grade math class, and our sections tied into teaching up to the middle and high school level. I enjoyed these sections and I will discuss how I felt working as my group and how I individually performed.…

Based on data I collected from coach observations, peer observations, and feedback I decided to focus on OETF indicator 1.B.1: Plans meaningful tasks that require student ownership. Upon determining that indicator and creating a teacher practice goal based on the data I collected, I began to further breakdown my observation feedback and use that as a baseline level. I noticed from my initial feedback that all of my students were not engaging in the task completely. I felt as though I could better support my students as I want them to all feel successful. In order to do that I worked with my coach and reflected on my task and how it could be adapted in the planning stage to be more meaningful.…

The ten given tips mentioned in the video all seemed to be very effective ones to implement in the classroom if done correctly. Classroom management is crucial, and can definitely make a difference in-between a well ran room and a chaotic classroom. The first tip mentioned was beginning the year tough. I definitely believe teachers have to set the stage of what is expected and stand their ground to instill the procedures and expectations into the students, but this should also not be taken to extreme measures where students are uncomfortable or scared to be in the class. Also, it’s easier for the teacher to set certain procedures such as bathroom signals, attention grabbers, or classroom rules at the beginning of the year so the students know…

    1. For me, the three most important things I learned in this class was to pay more attention to the behaviors obtained and expressed by children, I learned more information on the various ways that a teacher can adapt and accommodate the special needs their students might need in order to be successful in their learning outcomes, and finally I learned how important it is for teachers to take the extra time to learn about the different cultures their students come from, whether it be by participating in cultural events, reading some books, or finding additional ways to immerse themselves in it. 2. To implement the above practices into my classroom, I will be sure to interact constantly with my students and their families, always trying to learn…

I really enjoyed the time I spent in Mrs. Flinn’s fourth grade classroom over Spring Break. I was able to observe for a total of four hours between Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning. During my time with the fourth graders, I took a closer look at the solid behavior classroom supports being used. Along with these supports, I was extremely impressed by the way Mrs. Flinn handled classroom management. Even though I observed during a very exciting week, she had great control over her students.…

The grow your skills and to gain a better understanding of yourself as a teacher, reflection is essential. Reflection allows teachers, to look back at lessons, weeks, terms or even years and view what went right and what went wrong thus allowing teachers to start to think critically about what is best for them moving forward. Reflection is crucial to the success of a student teacher, as without it they will struggle to grow, recognise their mistakes and adjust their methods in the future. When reflecting on my own placement and in particular on the above lesson, I have learnt a lot about myself and what I need to do to become a quality teacher.…

It was something I did not plan for. For instance in the listening micro lesson, some of them asked questions or asked me to rewind the audio file while they were supposed to be listening to it and do not disturb their colleagues. I have learned that I have to put some rules from the beginning of the session. For instance, I should tell students to write down their questions and wait till the end of the audio file. Besides, these like-real situations helped me to be more comfortable standing up in front of…
