Self-concept is the set of perceptions individuals have about themselves. Over the course of one’s life, their self-concept will change a few time because of changing circumstances and new experience they will face. One’s self-concept will also change as their perception of their place in society changes. While self- concepts tend to be very stable as an 18-year-old, my self- concept will change because I am still trying to find my place in the world. Perception is the way someone sees situations and people can perceive the same situation in different ways. The differences in perceptions are often where conflicts derive from. The perception process is comprised of four steps: selection, organization, interpretation, and negotiation. Selection is when the choice is made to pay attention to one impression while no attention is paid to other impressions. An example of this a women wearing a nice dress and her hair is done professionally, but because her shoes don’t go with the outfit people might perceive she doesn’t look good. The step of organization is when we put information in a way which best makes sense to us. The way we organize things we observe; height, race, and other, are all to be taken into considerations.
