The only thing that cannot be taken away from oneself, no matter the circumstances, is your name. This is why I think it is important for one to know what his or her name means. When I began thinking about my name, I started by interviewing my parents. I knew that I was named after my grandfather and my mother, but I did not know the origins of their names. I researched my first, middle, and last names using the Internet, interviewing my mother, and utilizing the library. I did all of this in hope of finding out not only the origin but also the meaning of my names. The final thing I did was use the Internet to find more facts about my name including: when and where it was most popular, what my name meant and famous people with the same first name. The research that I gathered offered more insight into the meaning of my name than I had ever imagined that it could, and all it would take to gain this insight is just a little research.

I started my research by interviewing my mother, Mindy Brand. She had told me before that my first name, Robert, had come from my grandfather, Robert Garner, and that my middle name, Lee, was her middle name. I first learned that Robert was Germanic and was derived from the word Hreodbeorht meaning ‘fame-bright’ (Dunkling and William). I was very intrigued by the origin and meaning of Robert, not only because it was my name but because I had always just thought of it as my name, and I had never thought that it would have an meaning.
