“Why is she sitting in the corner?” said my new classmate Lalita. “She always has been like that. She only talks to us outside class because we make noise in class time.” replied her best friend Camilla.
I always heard the “Brestonidas” complain about me, but I did not give it much of my attention because they just did not know why I act the way I do. This was a group of famous girls of my school, very mean and they did not care about studying. They could always find a compliment to piss me off and distract me in class, but I always remained focused and attentive. This gives me a lot of responsibilities because I have to take care of all of them plus all the home chores. My parents look up to me to cover for all of their education costs in the future. I happen to be one of the fewest girls in my community who have got the chance to reach secondary school without dropping out school because I am pregnant or lack of school fees. I’m the first girl in my community to take the challenge of studying science subjects Physics, chemistry and Biology. This is because the society has this belief that boys are the ones who can manage Science subjects because they are stronger.
All these reasons have been pushing me through all my education up to this stage. Sometimes I feel like giving up and letting go because it’s not easy to cope up with the society’s insults and discouragements. The society’s idea is that I’m being too ambitious but above all I have a family which needs that ambition to survive in the future.
