My School Counseling Philosophy

Improved Essays
I have always been interested in helping people, especially children. It is rewarding for me to think that I am assisting children in making the most of their childhood and educational experiences. I believe that this will in turn influence the type of adult that they become.

My school counseling philosophy has evolved throughout my years in education. As an educator, I notice that many students come to school without being emotionally and mentally ready to learn. They have many non-educational, family and peer relationship problems that take precedence over learning. These distractions interfere with their readiness for instruction.

I believe that these needs must be addressed for students to be able to reach their instructive potential.

The purpose of the ASCA National Model is to outline the components of a comprehensive school counseling program, and bring school counselors together with one vision and one voice, which focuses to improve student achievement (ASCA National Model, 2012, p. xxi). The use of the ASCA National Model is essential to a successful counseling program, and I really saw this in action when setting up my counseling session. The ASCA states that “effective school counseling programs are a collaborative effort between the school counselor, parents, and other educators to create an environment that promotes student achievement” (p. xxi). Over the past few weeks I have worked with my collaborative team of teachers, counselors, and parents to determine…

There are four main components of the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model, which include the foundation, management, delivery, and accountability (ASCA, 2012). Through collaborative efforts, the foundation helps to build the focus of the school counseling program, identifies what students should gain because of the program, identifies what school counselors should be doing to support the program, and ethical considerations that create a program that will not cause harm to students (ASCA, 2012). The management component is crucial because it provides assessments and tools that help to provide continued development, implementation, and evaluation of the program as well as of the counselors (ASCA, 2012). The delivery component…

This paper will be centered on an ethical dilemma involving a 7th grade boy named John who was suicidal, and was not given the proper care by his school counselor. To solve this ethical dilemma, the ethical decision making model will be used to apply it by going through six steps. First, to get to the root of the issue in this ethical dilemma, the problem needs to be identified and to see whether this is an ethical, legal, professional, or clinical issue. Since the ethical dilemma has something to do with school counseling, the ASCA ethical standards for school counselors will be used to see which codes the school counselor did not follow. The nature and dimensions of the dilemma will also be determined along with the moral principles and professional…

The School Counselor, as a Systems Change Agent must align principles of the school counseling program to work for the success of the academic mission of the school. Academic, career, and personal-social development for all students is the driving goal of the comprehensive and fully implemented counseling program and the counselor. However, I would emphasize that closing the achievement gap is a fundamental to practical and beneficial systems change. It requires a collaborative model of counseling that brings all resources together in support of direct dialogue of identified achievement gaps and barriers to success, and considerations for solutions to close the gap with help from teachers, parents, administration and professional school counselors…

Before starting on this artifact, I was not comfortable with the counseling standards. They seemed obscure and subjective at best. I had no idea that counselors have definitive guidelines with substantial training on how to accommodate each concept to each situation. It is quite daunting to imagine that there is a well-established standard of procedures and protocols that are flexible and successful in addressing each individual need. By compiling the information for this comprehensive notebook, I have a whole new appreciation for the many resources that are available to me that will allow a successful beginning to my new adventure as a school counselor.…

Introduction The school counseling profession is continually evolving. To this end, the roles and responsibilities of a school counselor can change according to societal concerns, and this can affect the school counseling curriculum. Societal concerns for safety in schools can prompt national policies and procedures, resulting in long-term changes to the school counselor role, curriculum, and scope of practice. Over the last five years, several incidents have rocked the American school system, but none more poignant that the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting in 2012.…

Personal Philosophy Chemise Hayes University of La Verne Educ 597/Winter 2015 Throughout this program we have learned about differing theoretical models and how counselors can use these approaches when counseling students. The counseling theories that I have gravitated toward during counseling are the Person-Centered and Solution-Focused theories. The Person-Centered Theory, a theory that was explained and established by Carl R. Rogers, stresses the client’s capability and responsibility to come up with ways to more precisely recognize and cope with reality. This approach helps the client to know themselves better which makes them more likely to express more appropriate behaviors for themselves.…

Hello Ashli, I enjoyed reading your informative post. I agree with your position that there are many key competencies that are essential for school counselors to possess. The key competencies that you suggested as crucial are the overall competencies as described by the American School Counselor Association’s (ASCA) school counselor competencies (ASCA, 2012). These competencies are what a comprehensive school counseling program is made of. If a counselor lacks these competencies they will not be able to deliver a comprehensive school counseling program as outlined by the ASCA model (ASCA, 2012).…

From the age of five, I have known that I wanted to help people. I spent my childhood years helping take care of my grandma. I was my grandmothers special little helper that would help the adults in the kitchen prepare grandma's meals and always made sure to have the pitcher full of water and ready for her medicine. When caring for my grandmother, I would get the world best satisfying feeling after making her feel better, which left me with the feeling of wanting to do more in hopes that my efforts would continue to make my grandmother feel better.…

Collaboration has been a huge factor in my school counseling development. The ASCA mentions that school counselors must work together with stakeholders both inside and outside the school (ASCA National Model, 2012, p. 6). By having a unified group of people (teachers, students, parents, community, administration, etc.) school counselors can access and support student achievement more effectively. Having this teamwork can really allow all parties to work towards a common goal of equality, which can build academic successes for every student.…

A mentor, advisor, helper, motivator, and educator, remain to be the first words that cross my mind when I think about the term counselor. As indicated in my first philosophy, a counselor should not be confused with an enabler. A counselor in college student affairs provides necessary tools for academic achievement, personal, social, emotional and career development. An enabler is one who encourages bad or self-destructive behavior in another. It is my goal and desire as a counselor to help students reach their fullest potential by creating a safe and comfortable environment that fosters success, creativity, individuality and promote academic, personal, emotional and social growth.…
