Childhood innocence and imagination are powerful elements and can shape a child’s life. In the story “Zolaria,” the author uses symbols and imagery to argue childhood innocence and imagination can be harmful. To fully experience life, one must grow out of childhood imagination and mature into adulthood. The narrator of “Zolaria” starts her tale as a young, wide-eyed girl and ends still naïve but as an adult.…

Comment to Eryn Speer from Rachel Garrison I enjoyed your paper overall, the different perspective of the storyteller made the story mysterious and exciting for the viewer. Up until the end I believed that the James we were speaking of was a creature and yet it was a human. Giving the audience a small glimse of what is in store for them during the story in the beginging and changing their expectations complately gives the storyteller the upperhand. Letting every detail of the story draw the viewer into what they believe is going to happen, then switching it around, keeping the reader insterested and questioning.…

In the Station Eleven, an exceptional science-fiction novel which is written by Emily St. John Mandel, the author never saves her ink on praising the value of human arts even after the apocalypse. In the first section of the book, a series of mysterious incidents begin with the sudden death of a vain actor, Arthur, who is playing as King Lear in Shakespeare’s famous drama on the stage. However, none of the colleagues of the dead can figure out a way to contact his family or friends. The abrupt death of Arthur seems have no meaning. Kristen, the main character in this book, is around seven or eight years old when she is performing as a child actor on that stage.…

The academic system of current society attempts to prepare students for working in the real world. The majority of students are encouraged to pursue studies in areas such as business and technology because it will ensure a high paying job and promote economic growth. Lately, students have begun to question whether studying the humanities are worth the tuition costs, and if a technical or science based major is a better option. Martha Nussbaum, in her essay “ Education for Profit, Education for Democracy”, brings attention to how “the current focus on education as a form of career training fails to teach students the skills necessary to participate in the political process” (61). Liberal arts schools aim to strengthen a student’s range of knowledge through the studies of arts and humanities.…

Humans are hardwired to form opinions and defend beliefs even if they might not be true. The article, Why Facts Don’t Change Our Minds by Elizabeth Kolbert argues that humans are miss-led by false information. The rush humans feel when they win an argument supporting their beliefs is a feeling unreplicated by anything else, even if they argue with incorrect information. The article also states that humans tend to make quick judgements without fully understanding a situation. Wide media usage, when information is often incorrect, could put society into a dangerous position.…

Sandra Cisneros, an author who is deeply inspired by her Mexican American heritage. This inspiration is clearly shown throughout each and every one of her writing pieces, such as “Salvador Late or Early”, as well as “Eleven”. Both short-stories focus on adolescents with a mature mindset and adult precision, and each story does a marvelous job portraying Cisneros constant writing style. “Salvador Late or Early” is focusing on a young boy, Salvador, with heavy burdens to carry on his shoulders, which is unfortunate because he is such a young boy with an old soul. The responsibilities he has are unimaginable due to the fact they don’t pertain to his age.…

At the critical age of thirteen, I, like all other thirteen-year-olds, transitioned from childhood into adolescence; unlike most thirteen-year-olds, however, I had the pleasure of experiencing one of those Earth-shattering revelations that rattled the foundations of the world I perceived, and this newfound lens would alter my understanding of… well, everything. My mother has always been adamant that her children, though born and raised in the United States, remain connected to their roots. Consequently, as a child, I was fortunate to spend a fair number of summer vacations visiting my grandmother in Beijing and travelling around to see the sights that China offered. She also spoke frequently of her homeland—its language, its legends, its legacy.…

Her thoughts show that she is quite wise, however she is also demeaning towards other characters and thinks she is the smartest person in her class. The author portrays this by using repetition. Rachel has the insightful idea that “when you're eleven, you're also ten, and nine, and eight, and seven, and six, and five, and four, and three, and two, and one.” Cisneros repeating this phrase throughout the text showcases Rachel’s perceptive idea that one is not what age they are, but all the ages below it as well.…

In times of despair the musical Waitress, music and lyrics written by Sara Bareilles, captures the sadness of true life troubles. The song “She Used To Be Mine” is a great example of that. The main character, Jenna Hunterson, sings this song in sorrow when she has an abusive husband and an unwanted pregnancy. During this song, she is hurt, lost and is trying to find herself again. This is why I decided to translate this piece into a teenager’s perspective with issues teenagers face in today's society as a realization of what some may have to go through.…
