Appendix 7 on a lesson I taught outlines a second transformational moment where I asked myself why I was reflecting negatively and why I thought the lesson had not gone as I hoped. This was a pivotal moment in my reflective journey because I had started to reflect deeper and I had altered my thought process. Prior to this, I would shy away from analysing where my lesson had gone wrong with the fear of rejection. However, this was one of the first times after my lesson where I had written a lesson observation and I was embracing reflecting on the negatives and asking myself, what can I do to ensure that does not happen again? Why weren’t the children engaged? This change in thinking has developed me as a reflective practitioner and has enabled me to develop, adapt and improve my pedagogy. Warwick (2002) states reflection provides the opportunity for the teacher and learner to connect through the emotional qualities of learning. They also agree that students should be involved in tasks that involve problem-solving and should be ready to justify their answers with evidence-based sources. Furthermore, reflection is encouraged as it allows the learner to assess their performance and identify areas for improvement (Huang et al, 2011). Impact on Future Practice…

I continue to grow and evolve along with the learners. Because learning is shaped by our life experiences, I strive to know and be accessible to learners. I welcome learners’ questions, comments, or concerns and encourage expression of individual opinions. To maintain interest and apply concepts, I incorporate the learners’ and my personal and social experiences, real world examples, and pertinent clinical experiences. Because the learning experience affects us as we are transformed and influenced by one another, I embrace the phenomenological pedagogy of reflective learning and strive to understand my actions in relation to the learners.…

Experience without reflection does not lead to learning and improving professional practice. However, through effective reflection a teacher can move from problematizing an experience or justifying a response to focussing on learning from the experience and improving professional practice. It is only through reflection that the teacher can view the learning context from a variety of viewpoints. Once new understanding is gained it can then be applied to practice.…

Reflection is to revise, to rethink and to take a step back and make sure something is at your best preference. This term is one that I always knew existed, but didn’t apply it to my own work or to my own life. However, now that I know exactly where to apply it, I realize it doesn’t have to be only in education. It could be used in education, in one’s career and life says Sandra L. Giles. It’s interesting because I know exactly what it is, yet I never found the urge to actually apply it.…

Though there is little interest in harmonizing the above three concept-related paradigms, the paradigm of reflection and inquiry teacher education seems to be more comprehensive. For instance, it appreciates the utilization of standards and concepts in teaching (as competency based teacher education focuses on) and individual teacher’s personal experiences as a major source of professional improvement in teaching (as personal orientation to teaching focus on). On top of this, reflection and inquiry model tries to address the recent argument of teaching made by the educators like Edwards et al. (2002) and Luttenberg & Bergen (2008).…
