Observing Patient Care

The hospital I work is large, with that being said the Education and Research are divided into many areas. We have Graduate Medical Education (GME), a SIM Center, Group Education and Training (GET) and the Clinical Investigation Facility (CIF). Since I work in Group Education and Training I decided to do my research on the CIF. The CIF does three different types of research: Animal, Human, and Cellular. The CIF provides services to the hospital as a whole: a few examples are they worked with the Family Medicine Residency clinic to see what the difference between centering on care and normal provider visits outcome was in pregnancy for military members and their families. I see the trend of outcomes research possible affecting the CIF. Since the CIF works with units and clinics in finding answers to problems that are affecting the patient or staff the possibility of this trend occurring in the future or at current time is high. The CIF wants to answer question that are needed to provide base practices or best patient care. This could cause the research to get in the trap of outcome research were “although patient outcomes are obviously important, they should not be the sole focused of attention in medical education research.“ (Cook & West, 2013). The reason that this might not be the case at this time in the CIF, is all the different areas of research that are being done at any given time. The hospital and clinic focused questions are only one area of the CIF research. At the same time I do not necessarily agree with the entire article by Cook and West. There are times when the reason to do research is to get best practice answers, the point of the medical profession is to provide staff with the knowledge to care for the patients in the best way possible and this does require Outcome …show more content…
The medical field itself as seen as a professional field, with a professional field comes how the staff and personal of all forms should act or behave. The CIFs attribution to the hospital personal having professional behaviors is assisting in “attaining a high level of education and committing to lifelong learning, the professional has credibility which has been proven by subjective and objective aspects.” (Konukbay, Yildiz, Fidanci, Yavuz, Akyol & Akbayrak, 2014). The form of education the CIF assist with is investigation through research of problems or issues that are faced, producing a study, and publishing the outcomes to provide the needed information for the staff to learn the best practice in that area. Staff in a given area have the opportunity to assist with the research itself and increase their knowledge in that way as well. The CIF does the research, which is deeply connected to education, the education that produces knowledge making the staff of the hospital more professional in their behaviors. I agree that life long education is needed for professionals and I believe that an area like the CIF makes great contributions to the education
