Catholic when I was 5 years old. I went to catholic school from Preschool to 8th grade, with mass on every Tuesday and on Holy Days of obligation. However, as I transferred to a public high school my entire extended family started to drift away from the church. We listened as sermons became increasingly related to donating more money to the Catholic Church, and watched as it out casted and judged others while preaching about not engaging in that activity. There was playful banter between the pastor and the people in the pews. This went on for about 15 minutes or so. In all the catholic masses I’ve been to, there has been an introduction before the mass but it’s usually quite short with nothing coming from the pews. Following this introduction, Broadway Methodist then called all young children to the front. This was very familiar to me as catholic masses include the same thing; children are called to the front and go off to hear about the scripture at a level more accessible for them. However, that is not what happened. The pastor actually sat in front of the alter and the kids sit down in a circle with her as she connected to them with a quick game of “patty-cake” followed by brief discussion of Jesus and why he was important. I thought this aspect was really interesting, because while the discussion was clearly focused on the children audience, there was something really nice to see the interaction between pastor and children and watching them be so excited to answer questions. I have to think that it’s this layout at such a young age that caused my friends to want to be so active in this church when we were in middle and high
