Throughout my life, I have had a “love-hate” relationship with writing. I have always had a passion for written word. However, I learned early on that passion alone is not enough. There is a vast array of skills required to write well. Unfortunately, my Junior High English teachers were quick to inform me that I severely lacked said skills. Even though their words of discouragement stuck with me they did not defeat me. I clearly remember the moment that had the most impact on me as a writer. It was seventh grade English and the assignment was to paint a picture and then write a short story about the picture you painted. I was immediately excited upon receiving the assignment. What could possibly be better than combining the two things I loved: writing and painting? Instantly I got to work on the painting. My writing skills have improved impressively over the years but are far from perfect. I still have a lot of opportunities to grow when it comes to knowing what to look for during the editing and revising processes as well as knowing how to correctly fix any issues I do find during these processes. Sentence structure is another area of mine that still requires a lot of enhancement. Learning and improving the many skills necessary to write well is itself a great challenge. I find that you never know as much as you think you do. Once you feel as though you have mastered it all you have really only begun. My negative experiences with writing in Junior High have caused me to be apprehensive when I write. I am constantly second guessing every little thing I put down on paper.
