“American Romanticism was the first full-fledged literary movement that developed in the U.S. It was made up of a group of authors who wrote and published between the years 1820 and 1860, when the U.S. was still finding its feet as a new nation.” It’s understandable that when people hear the word romanticism, they think of love and romance. However, the word “romanticism” actually comes from a movement that changed the way in which various literary writers (and artists) expressed themselves, how they viewed the world around them, and how they conveyed cultural and moral values.…

During this second set of readings, five authors caught my attention for their writing styles, historical relevance, relatability, creativity, and originality. During the first sets of readings after Barlow, Tecumseh and his speech “The White Men Are Not Friends to the Indians" caught my eye. Personally as a minority myself, I felt that I could relate to him to a slight degree and understand his perspective on his uphill battle against the Americans. I also felt that his speech itself was empowering because of the sense of unity and camaraderie he created with his words between the Indian people by using lines such as, "we must smoke the same pipe" (Tecumseh 517) and using their common spiritual beliefs and describing their relatable misfortunes caused by the Americans to create various bridges between the other tribes. However, I found Tecumseh 's situation as a whole tragic, since he died in battle leading his army against the Americans…

Recently a grand discovery was made in the back of a journal in Savannah, Ga. The journal belonged to Conrad Aiken before his death in 1973. It was found while an organization called The Aiken Project was cleaning out his safety deposit box, with the permission of his children, in order to create an exhibit in the Savannah College of Art and Design Library. Aiken is one of Savannah’s well-known poets of the 20th century, and because of this The Aiken Project, created in his honor, wants to create an exhibit to showcase his greatest short stories and poems. While researching for this exhibit it was discovered that Aiken owned a safe deposit box that has remained relatively untouched by his children, with whom he left the key, until 1990 when…

Having such pieces of literature to examine like The Gettysburg Address, a speech; The Yellow Wallpaper, a short story; and I, Too, a poem, show the evolution of literature over time, how these pieces of literature affected history, and how history affected these pieces of literature.…

The preface tells me that this book is mainly about students’ writing, and these students’ papers are selected from the best papers that were written by UCSB students. In other word, it is an students teaching materials. From reading starting line, I can improve my writing skill and change my writing style as I read plenty of high level papers, and this give me an brief standard of what is the standard for a good English course paper. One different that I noticed is Starting Line uses students’ writing examples as “articles,” and it makes Linguistic students more easier to understand since the language that students write are similar. Another interesting point that I notice from reading the first essay is that most of the articles in Starting…

English 106 was the first real college class that I ever stepped foot in, and because of that, I was extremely nervous and unsure. The English teachers at my high school always said that the papers they assigned were held to college standards, and I always did well on those assignments, but I was still unsure about this course. I expected this course to be loaded with reading and writing assignments that would make me pull all-nighters on a regular basis. After going through English 106, I realized that there were not too many assignments and that I learned a lot from each one. To me, the most salient parts of this course were the discourse community paper, the annotated bibliography, the art analysis, peer reviews, revisions, and reflections.…

I was not an excellent writer at the beginning of the school year, but I can gladly say now that I have inherited more writing skills that I will benefit from in the future. One of those skills is being able to reflect on every angle on my topic to allow me to organize my ideas accurately. This skill is beneficial to learn, for it helped with my report essay to acquire the focus of my paper more clearly. Moreover, this skill helped me write papers in my other classes more easily and efficiently. Likewise, my voice can be read strongly throughout the personal narrative essay, because the passion I had for my topic was an emotional one.…

Before I researched How Music affects Mental Health I knew that music touches a different part of the brain that can be distant or hard to connect to without it. Music also plays a huge role in my life as it does many others in the world. I sing everyday and that’s therapy in itself. My curiosity with how music affects mental health began when my sister started music therapy. Ever since I was a little girl I've always turned to music to get me through hard times.…

Over the course of this semester I learned a handful of things about myself as a writer, that will help me develop as a more proficient writer over the course of my four years here. As a writer one of my strengths is backing up my argument with solid and concrete evidence that truly makes the reader believe what they are reading. Another area of my writing that I excel in is being able to process great ideas that follow the guidelines and the prompt. With that being said I have also seen that while the ideas may come with ease, I do have a challenging time with getting the ideas from my head onto paper in a manner that isn’t so disorganized that it makes the reader second guess themselves. Another shaky part of my writing comes much before the actual forming of sentences.…
