One day as I leisurely read, I stumbled upon the following quote, “Strength does not come from winning. Your struggles develop your strengths. When you go through hardships and decide not to surrender, that is strength.” On a website comprised of many short yet moving quotes, this one quote in particular was the most tangible to me in the entire collection. For weeks, I pondered on the very essence of strength and questioned what hardships have I endured and how was I strengthened by it. Oddly enough, I discovered my strength lies within the projection of my voice.

The median income for a household in my neighborhood is approximately $23,000, with 24.9% of the population living below the poverty line. Coupling these statistics with my racial identity as a teenage African American, I am seven

Therefore, being a UNCG Guarantee Scholar would mean the world to me. I spoke with a former UNCG Guarantee Scholar, Tiara Taylor and she informed me on how this program left her debt free in college, gave her so many experiences that she wouldn 't have had if she didn 't go through it, met so many people and was a great support system for her. I love how UNCG Guarantee helps in-state students graduate from UNCG in four years with little or no debt as well as provides a support program to encourage academic and personal

It also provided a detailed description of what having those strengths mean and examples of how they are prominent in a person 's life. Our theatre group decided to look at suburban poverty when we realized many people have difficulties accepting poor people as a part of their society. Currently, there are many people living in poverty in Columbus and the rest of America: of these people, quite a few are single mothers and their children. Despite the fact that some people who live in poverty work, their minimum wage jobs typically aren’t enough to keep them financially secure. Ignoring this, the upper and middle class have perpetuated a single story for these lower-class members out of frustration: classifying them as lazy and therefore undeserving of financial aid. As a group, we wanted to unravel the layers behind the single story of poverty and discover why, and how,…

All of these questions are pondered, in Terry Tempest Williams’ When Women Were Birds, and Laurie Penny’s Unspeakable Things. Why can’t my community be more socio-economically diverse? I have asked myself this question repeatedly to try to understand where the root of the problem is. However, it has also exposed me to the underlying issue of a need for accessibility, especially with economic diversity. I believe that we need to find a way to introduce more public schools and affordable housing into my community as a way to reach a broader more diverse population.…

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in 2014 there were 46.7 million people in poverty with over 21% being under the age of 18 years old (U.S. Census Bureau, 2015). This percentage of poverty is well above other developed countries (Santrock, 2015). For those who live in poverty, acquiring and maintaining basic life necessities such as food, clothing, housing and transportation is a struggle. For someone who has not experienced poverty, the conveniences that life offers, such as a quality education, job opportunities, healthcare, day care and homeownership are wishful thinking to the poor. Individuals living in impoverished neighborhoods are often at a higher risk of being exposed to criminality and violence.…
