Personal Narrative: My Trip To University Hospital

May 22, 2011 began as an ordinary day only to take a turn for the worse. It was the summer of my seventh grade year when my dad and I decided to go fishing for the day. My head was consistently sliding from my hand, my arm, and eventually into midair where I would finally catch myself and bring myself back to the starting position. However, at one point I was not awakened by the motions of drifting to sleep, but rather a …show more content…
An on-call Orthopedic Surgeon had already been notified and was on his way to meet us there. When he arrived, it was time to get down to business. He began by taking a look at the x-rays that were sent over by Trinity, then he examined my wound. He eventually decided that he could extract the glass and clean the wound as much as possible without any need for surgery. His confidence helped ease the tension from the previous hospital. He began the long, tedious process in no time. Though I felt some slight pressure in the wound, just my bone being poked with a Q-tip (no biggie), I hardly felt a thing. After removing the glass, he then proceeded to wash out the excess gravel and residue from inside of the wound. However, removing every single piece of gravel was too strenuous of a process and leaving it in my skin would not cause any harm. After hours in the hospital, the wreck occurring at 3 PM and being discharged at 1AM, I was finally on my way

A Surgeon’s Morning Work Kilrain a confederate soldier was wounded at Little Round Top defending it, he was shot at the side of his stomach. He was taken to a hospital in an ambulance where he began to feel weak from the loss of blood. The bullet would’ve hit the lower part of his rib cage, it would’ve shattered his ribs and throw them towards tissue, possibly hitting his kidney which is a very serious injury, but surgeons during the Civil War didn’t have x-ray machines yet so they couldn’t tell where the bullet was, so they would just have to check around the entrance wound and dig around for the bullet. They would’ve given him an anesthetic drug like Opium, Ether, or Chloroform to deal…

You see some sort of plant has infected your left leg, leaving a large puffy numb section of your leg. You go home and show it to your wife and ask her opinion, she says go to the surgeon and get it checked, and you do. The surgeon peers skeptically at the throbbing skin, and finally makes a consultation on the marks. The most common treatment surgeons used was amputation. Hip amputations had a mortality rate of eighty-three percent. Surgeons didn’t know anything about hygiene or sanitation, so they would use the same tools over and over again. The most the tools would get clean would be a quick wipe on the surgeon's apron. Most little girls dream of being a ballerina when they grow up, I was the little girl who dreamed of medical school. Anyone who was brave enough to ask got my vehement no when asked if I thought that the college, subsequent medical school, and training would be too much school or that I would get bored. I decided very early that to be a doctor was one of the most exciting things that a person could chose to be and my fantastic pediatrician was the initial spark for this love of medicine. The care that I could see him exhibit in his daily operations as well as the ease at which he interacted with patients and parents alike inspired me. His knowledge was fascinating and I longed to have that level of understanding of the human body.…

I spoke clear and confidently about what I assessed. I told him that the RN prior to me had concerns that there might be a hematoma. He said that the RN had reported that there was a raised area near the incision that was painful and the size of a soft ball. I then let him know that I medicated the patient with the appropriate medication he had ordered and her pain was now a 2/10. I went on to report that the incision over her chest was not very large and it just looked like the battery.…
