Essay On Middle Childhood Observation

For my middle childhood observation I observed one of my students in the class I volunteer for. He is a nine year old boy in the third grade. I observed his work habit and behavior during one of their English lessons. In the beginning of the lesson, he was quiet and wouldn’t talk to anyone. He would sit with his arms crossed and stared at the board. His face was red and his eyebrows were scrunched up together like he was mad or confused. During the middle of the lesson he was laying his head down and did his work. When one of his peers tried to talk to them he threw his hand up and told them to go away. I noticed in the student that I observed he was showing independence, was back talking, and a hint of rebellion. These are all normal signs of development, but at the same time we should be aware of this and try to help him control his anger. When I tried to ask him if he needed assistance he said no, I am fine (with some sass), this shows that he is trying to be independent (which is a good thing). However, when I turned my attention to the student next to him he started to mumble something under his breath. When I asked him what he said he told me that it was nothing, and then he smacked his forehead and started to write harder on his paper. I do not think that he was saying anything rude to me, but I do think he may have been saying mean things about himself. His teacher also informed me that he has high anxiety and becomes flustered easily. I have also noticed that he is self-conscious because during carpet time he would wrap himself into a sitting fetal position and bury his chin and mouth into his
