They are the most effective way to get all of your students involved, formatively assess them, engage them in critical thinking and much more. After gaining practicum experience, the “Thumbs-Up When Ready and Processing Cards” is a TPT that I find especially useful. When I am teaching, I find it difficult to gauge when my students are ready to share. By incorporating a simple thumbs-up or a fun processing card, their readiness becomes very clear to me. The other TPT that I am eager to use in my classroom is the “Hold Ups.” These are a fun, fast way to see where students are at. I grew in these standards throughout the whole semester, but I also learned how to apply them in my Case Study, or tutoring experience. The 4th standard, Content Knowledge, was important because there are many different tools and strategies I need to understand in order to teach literacy. Readings over various content, such as the pillars of effective literacy instruction, declarative, procedural and conditional knowledge, reading comprehension and fluency, were beneficial to build knowledge.
In terms of the 5th standard, Application of Content, we engaged in various activities to connect the content knowledge to content application. Specifically, the comprehension presentation helped me grow in this standard. We also created various organizers and mind maps that helped sort out how to apply the content. This standard is important because even if I know all of the content, it means nearly nothing if I don’t know how to apply it in my classroom.
