Steps that I will take to begin the school year will emphasize on what is expected in the classroom as far as behavior. I will set rules and regulations with clear consequences for unacceptable behavior. These rules will be enforced throughout the year in which students will eventually become accustom to them. I would also implement well designed professional development such as a collaborative and continuous learning environment. I would also develop a mentoring program to reduce feelings of isolation, increase teacher retention, foster long-lasting relationships, and build up an excess of methods and strategies to draw from throughout the school year (Ambrosetti,…

The 2nd grade classroom of Jody Craddock-Iselin has 20 students and each of them has their own personality. I have been observing this class every Thursday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. where I am learning so much about how to teach. I have taught two whole group lessons where I have learned that sometimes you have to teach on the student’s level to help them learn and understand the lesson better. I also have got the opportunity to teach a guided reading lesson which has helped me to understand students on different levels of the reading scale. I think that I am doing well in this class and I am learning so much from my teacher.…

A few years ago I was asked by my department chair to teach an English Language Development (ELD) class. As I had only been teaching for a year, I was unfamiliar with the full requirements of the class and nervous to take on what I felt was a BIG responsibility. Once I accepted our dean of curriculum asked me to be the ELD advisor. I took two days to decide that with my family background, my grandfather picked fruit for a living and my mom picked and packed growing up, I could make the students understand that working hard in school and continuing their education post high school could help them get more out of life than merely staying at a menial job. My first year was difficult.…

As the number of English Language Learner (ELL) students continues to grow, many schools are not prepared to face the challenges that ELL students will encounter. Schools struggle to provide ELL students with the appropriate type of assistance that is needed for the students. Research shows that when schools are not prepared to solve problems with ELL students, the schools will classify the student as special needs or as a special education student (Anderson, Minnema, 2005). ELL students are labeled as special need or special education because of the lack of test fairness. The test unfairness is caused by the assessments and evaluation tools that are used to determine whether students meet the qualifications for special education,…

During my observation of an ESL push-in classroom, I have come across with many pedagogical issues and concerns that were brought in the Methods of Teaching class. Such topics include the use of cooperative Learning, classroom setting, adapting lesson plan and differentiated instructions by incorporating visuals, hands-on activities, simulations of real life situations etc so that students can nurture their skills academically, linguistically, socially as well as emotionally. The purpose of this report is to focus solely on the two major components of teaching-learning environment, and the components are relatively described as the classroom environment and the participation of students in relation with what I have learned in this class. When I entered the classroom, the first thing fascinated me was that all the four word walls were well labeled in both the languages(English and Spanish) with appropriate pictures. The setting of the room was safely configured, and convenient as well as appealing to the kids.…
