Alison Gernert Writing Style

I interviewed Alison Gernert, my writing professor, at 1 in the afternoon on August 1 in Rush Rhees. When talking to my professor she told me that I am doing very well in the class. She asked me how I felt I was doing and I mentioned how I didn’t have confidence in voicing my opinions in classes so she told me that the class has no standards. I can voice my opinions without judgement because everyone has a voice. She said that my first formal paper was the worst grade I had received in the class, which was a 85%. She said that when reading my essay she wasn’t able to hear my own voice, everything was based on the paper but I didn’t deliver my opinion. Alison then asked me how I was doing on my second formal paper and I told her that I was able to put all my thoughts onto the paper however, because I put all my thoughts on the paper it confused the readers. I told her that I went to a writing consultant and how he was able to show me how I had one central idea throughout my essay and that I should transition my essay more smoothly. She told me to continue seeing a consultant or go to a writing group because if I were to do my work with them, they will help me get my work done. …show more content…

Hello Prof. Shaw, I'm afraid that I'm having difficulties with Katherine Conway’s ENG 309 class, and I was hoping you could advise me. First, I received a poor grade on a paper recently that will certainly hurt my grade significantly and I was wondering what grade I needed to get in the class for it to count towards my creative writing and literature major? I'm afraid I may get a C. Second, when I met with Prof. Conway this past Friday to find out exactly why my grade was so low she spoke to me in a loud, harsh, and overbearing tone that, combined with her demeaning and accusatory language, crossed the line into emotional abuse. I was holding back tears minutes into our conversation; before I left she stated that she did not understand why I did not understand the prompt and that she could not give me a better grade until I figured it out. I barely made it out of her office before tears were rolling down my face and by the time I made it back to my room I was sobbing uncontrollably.…

Even then, I feel I lacked into giving more detail. Moreover, in the same argumentative essay I didn’t give a strong point that supported my main point. “ In the article, “We’re fatter but Not Smarter,” Shannon Brownlee, states how Elliott Bloom became with the idea of “smart research” a survey that indicates what type of consumers are eating the most at Taco Bell restaurants.…

At the beginning of the year around the same time that the first essay assignment was being discussed and explained I began to think that the assignment was going to be somewhat easy. I began to search for books that seemed interesting to research, that I could use for the assignment. The selection process was one of the most time consuming parts of the assignment. I I gathered the final four books which were “Rebel Souls”, “Walt Whitman Reconsidered”, “Walt Whitman: A Gay Life”, and “Walt Whitman”. I began to realize that this essay was not as easy as I thought it was.…

I remember the first time I wrote an essay that was being graded at the college level. This was in my junior year when I took AP Language and Composition, our first essay was a rhetorical analysis essay from a very old excerpt that used old english and was very hard to read. When I first started reading the passage I started to get nervous because I didn't understand what the text was saying but then I started to annotate and the passage began to make sense. I found many rhetorical strategies that the author used and I then began to outline the essay in my head.…
