My Reflection Of My Writing In High School

Improved Essays
Throughout the course of this semester, I have seen tremendous growth in my writing, research, and thinking abilities. When I first began this course, I had no idea what college writing entailed and how to write a piece of scholarly work. My previous experience with writing in high school was dominated by the typical five paragraph structure essay. This course was so essential for me to learn how to write academic papers and enter an actual scholarly discussion, which will allow my writing to have an actual impact in the real world. When I started my writing seminar, I had an idea of what good writing was from high school, and through writing seminar, I built on those skills as well as developed new skills. In high school, I learned that …show more content…
One of them is coming up with an original idea for a thesis. Throughout the semester, I had trouble coming up with an original idea for my thesis. Sometimes my idea was similar to another scholar’s idea and wasn’t truly original. During the semester, I meet with my professor and the writing center. They gave me hints at what sources to look at to develop an original thesis, which was really helpful. However, in the future, I would like to be able to create a thesis by myself. I would like to be able to look at sources and find a gap and think of a way to fill the gap by myself. This would truly help my academic writing and thinking abilities. I could further develop this skill by reading articles in general. I can read opinions articles on news websites. Then I can think about their argument and challenge their argument, which will allow me to develop my critical thinking abilities. In addition, I can further improve my skills in connecting sentences with the topic and stress positions. I think connecting sentences using the topic and stress positions will make my writing clearer, which allows the reading to better understand my essay. I can develop this skill outside of my writing seminar class by practicing it in everyday writing. I should make sure that each of my sentences starts out with an old idea and ends by introducing a new idea. By taking advantage of the stress position, I can my writing better and clearer to the

An essay or project in which I am allowed to argue a particular perspective and required to support my viewpoint with evidence makes me tick intellectually. I am excited by these persuasive papers and debates, because my mind thinks logically. My strengths lie in math and science, topics in which logic is necessary and mandatory. Therefore, I admit that I struggle in English and history classes. However, the opportunity to use logical thinking and reasoning allows the greyness of these classes to become a little more black and white.…

As an incoming freshman in August of 2015 taking Rhetoric 105, I not only learned how to take apart papers, summarize, paraphrase, analyze and construct passages, but overall to be a great thinker. There are many ways that a person can tell you that works to become a better thinker, but it starts within you. While writing papers this fall semester, I learned that my writing became better when I a. understood what was being asked of me via the criteria, b. allowed myself to make mistakes in order to understand what I was and wasn 't doing correctly, c. I started to question myself, not in a way of was the work too hard, but in the sense of what the assignment and the thesis I am creating is asking. At this stage, you have to be completely real…

Throughout this semester, we have written two major papers that really display my capabilities as a writer. By evaluating these two pieces with the learning outcomes established at the beginning of this semester, outcomes 1, 2, and 3 are most applicable when gauging my progress in this course. Learning outcome 1 is, "Demonstrate academic research and writing skills in essays and projects to participate in a scholarly conversation" Learning outcome 2 is, "Demonstrate critical reading through a knowledge of the forms and functions of a variety of texts" Learning Outcome 3 is, "Follow a research writing process that includes developing a topic, locating and evaluating sources (including peer-reviewed), composing in response to those sources, and revising and reflecting on that process;" Each of these outcomes I believe I have met by using them as goals when writing in and out of class. In my essay "Survivors and their Children: Examining the Holocaust's Multigenerational Effects" I discuss the impact the Holocaust has on those who survived it and on their children.…

For instance, I understand how rhetorical situations come into play when writing; it is important to think about what, why and to whom you are telling your story. Knowing that will make your essay better. I was also able to develop certain strategies when writing. Such as creating an outline and using that to draft my final essay. Furthermore, I used a summary format to describe my English learning experience in America.…

I started my journey through writing this year a bundle of nerves and a stomach full of coffee. This is my first year taking an advanced English course, but I was determined to do well. There has been no sleeping in class or slacking off this year, I’m lucky enough to take a college course a year early and at a better price, and I’m not going to waste it. I’ve learned a lot this semester, including but not limited to: identifying how exactly the author’s purpose and audience determines effective writing, developing pieces of writing though a process of planning, revising, and drafting, compose an organized essay with clear points and main ideas, used appropriate tone and formality, critiqued writing, and finally how to grasp the MLA format. My writing has improved through the concepts I have learned this semester.…

Knowing I had to aim for a different audience this time around really affected my writing. When my tone for the original paper was rather informal and even somewhat fun, now I had to write for the APA, a group of people who take this line of work very seriously (as they should). Due to this, I gave my arguments a more serious tone, and I even expanded my vocabulary a bit to give a good impression. If I want the APA to listen to me, I should write in a tone they would use. I was careful about the sources I used for this.…

As an analytical person coming up with the ideas and finding reliable and relevant information is done with ease. Such as this excerpt from the Casual analysis essays “Here she shows that she can relate to those who take selfies and has a personal understanding of selfies affect. She effectively pushes the emotional downside to selfies by associating them as a degrading practice with women.” where I quoted the author and the explained the reasoning for use of her antidotal evidence and its connection to the essay. Writing thesis was another one of my strengthen as seen in the Evaluation essay’s introduction “Because social media is easily accessible, always up to date, and provides a variety of information for various audiences it is a better source of news than television” I am able to clearly layout the basic elements of the argument in one concise sentence.…

Though at times, reading nonfiction, scholarly works daily feels tedious and annoying, it has indubitably extended my intellectual capacity. Reading and discussing so often has fostered the highest intellectual engagement that I have ever had in my life, and has significantly impacted the content of my essays. Considering that when I read I gain more knowledge, my essays are now better defined and developed with depth and thoroughness instead of fluff and lack of insight. Throughout the course of the semester, my ability as a writer has increased at a slight level. The semester began on a rough patch with my initial submission of assignment one, but that was quickly resolved in my revisions. Since that point, my grades have been relatively similar. I would accredit this improvement to the feedback I received on the first assignment, although some of my faults could be seen in the next assignment as well. Since that point, however, my writing has been relatively consistent.…

I was not an excellent writer at the beginning of the school year, but I can gladly say now that I have inherited more writing skills that I will benefit from in the future. One of those skills is being able to reflect on every angle on my topic to allow me to organize my ideas accurately. This skill is beneficial to learn, for it helped with my report essay to acquire the focus of my paper more clearly. Moreover, this skill helped me write papers in my other classes more easily and efficiently. Likewise, my voice can be read strongly throughout the personal narrative essay, because the passion I had for my topic was an emotional one.…

English Composition I taught me a lot about myself, including how to be a better college student, through the process of writing. At the beginning of the year, I was not very excited about having to write argumentative papers. This is because I did not care enough about the assigned topics to have an opinion. But, I did learn a lot that I would not have known otherwise from having to research information about the topics I chose to write about. For example, in paper #2, I wrote about the niqab and how I believe that it is oppressive to women.…

If you were to ask me about my high school writing experience, I would tell you that I did not have much experience. We did not have any classes at my school that were specifically writing classes. At my high school, we just had regular English classes where we would occasionally do a few papers in. My English teacher senior year was a great person, but did not necessarily teach us a lot about proper styles of writing papers. Coming into college English, I did not feel well prepared with what to expect for a college level writing class.…

A lot of what I learned doing my argument project is that some areas of my writing were common, no matter what the subject, with my classmates. A comment in unison from the class is that most did not know as much about composing an argument as believed. How children learn that an argument means angry raised voices, not carefully considered fact based opinion is somewhat vague. I know I do not recall anyone defining this term for me.…
