My Reflection Of My Personal Philosophy Of Service

Great Essays
Service is not just something one does—it is a way of life. My personal philosophy of service stems from my earliest values instilled during my childhood, and was bolstered by my experiences throughout high school and college. Interactions with individuals from vastly different walks of life offered a new perspective on life itself, enabling me to understand the intangible forces at work, how they govern and may inhibit certain opportunities in the future, and how one may intercede to enable another to climb to his or her potential. These aspects of my personal philosophy have remained the primary pillars of my tenets, and they have taken a multitude of forms, evolving from simply acting on puerile intents to help others, to developing a motive …show more content…
The present goal, which would have seemed a grandiose claim to my former self, lays within my grasp, but has required successive bouts of personal development and meaningful encounters. Being a member of a living learning community, focused on service and leadership, provided me with my first-hand exposure to the inequalities present in society and education of the roles they play. Though my initial aim was to get the most out of my first-year experience, have the opportunity to explore various service organizations on UNC’s Campus, and find my fit with various modes of service from direct to organizational, the experiences I gained were the start of a transformative process. I must note that as a student majoring in a STEM dominated field of study, my initial experiences with …show more content…
I initially started volunteering in the hospital as an addendum to my coursework—looking for pain points and opportunities for medical device innovation. While finding addressable problems with a substantial market value was akin to finding a needle in a haystack, issues with medical administration screamed out loud from the moment I set foot in the emergency department. Volunteers were staffed to run errands, fill out paperwork, restock medical supplies, and occasionally converse with patients. This however did not help in any way to mitigate greater problems, such as how the lack of mental health facilities caused the psych wards to over flow and take up beds in the rest of the emergency department, or sometimes the doctors had to ignore cries of help from some patients because there were simply too many. A lot of the time, doctors spent filling out paper works for insurance purposes, spending more time typing and clicking than diagnosing and discharging. But what could a student trained to build medical devices do to fight against the tugs of the insurance companies and politicians? While I found climbing the ladders of bureaucracy could be one method to get into a position to serve others and influence change, I could do so by taking the knowledge I gained and building meaningful connections through my own

One of the most exciting things that have happened in this new semester of school is having the opportunity of attending a service learning class. Personally, I believe that it is important to engage not only in educational programs, but also in service learning courses that will help us grow as service agents and leaders in our communities. Having the opportunity of working hand in hand with the House of Loreto is not only an enrichment opportunity, but also since I am studying Occupational Therapy it helps me to have a deeper understanding of the elderly population which I plan on working with in the future. Working closely with the resident Eileen Miller helped me to have a deeper understanding of the course readings and how the elders…

National Junior Honor Society I am going to tell you how the National Junior Honors Society’s standards of scholarship, character, service, leadership, and citizenship are essential compounds to developing a principled, reflective, caring, communicator, and thinker. Thus, I enrolled in a volunteering program at Greenwich Hospital in order to not only encounter a doctor’s working environment, but also to serve the patients who are a member of my community in Greenwich. In the hospital my job can range from sorting and arranging hundreds of mails, escorting patients, helping with maintaining hygiene, to sending flowers to the patients. According to my supervisor and the volunteers’ website, there are approximately a total of 700 volunteers who the staff believe to be the unsound heros of the hospital. Due to the number of volunteers, the staff assign us to different sections of the hospital within which assigning to be an escorter is one of my favorite as it allows me to encounter patients and doctors from different departments. Gradually from observation and conversation with many of the doctors in the hospital and some of my father’s friends I perceived the drudgery, the stress, the paper works, the coordination, the management skills that are necessary for surviving in this field after having endured the hardship of medical school.…

Service can be defined in many ways and by many actions; personally, I view service as helping or doing work for someone, especially work that one may not be used to doing in everyday life. Volunteer work is truly my idea of service, mainly because of the fact that no charge is incorporated into the work, keeping it centered with good intentions and pure motives. I applied this exact attitude towards my work for UIndy’s Super Saturday of Service, specifically when I was sent to South Circle Farm in Indianapolis. This agency is known for their growth and sale of fresh fruits and vegetables using solely organic methods; they vow to their customers to avoid the input of any synthetic materials or chemicals, promising to only use nutrients that benefit customers, the farm, and the products themselves.…

How do I feel about character, leadership, and service? I feel that leadership and service are both parts of a good character. When you meet an individual that is an outstanding leader and services others you often deem them to be someone with good character. I want to be a person of good character and to represent myself as a person that they can trust to get things done and get them done well. When people mention Rachael Nida, they should think of her as someone of good character.…

Often times when we hear the word ‘service’ we think of doing something for someone other than yourself. In that moment of kindness, you may not think that your small gesture or the work you are doing for someone could have an impact on someone’s life or even the world. Throughout the text, The Work by Wes Moore, the idea of work has a much bigger meaning that states having a life that matters is important. He believes that living a life full of meaning, purpose, and service are the keys that allow you to become part of a bigger picture.…

Through the various organizations that I joined such as Legacy and Business Council, I was able to have direct interactions with the College of Business. From hosting events such as Legacy’s Business Week carnival day, to Business Council’s Impact day, I was given opportunities to explore the inter-workings of the College of Business. Legacy and Business Council establish great emphasis on service and giving back to the community. Being heavily involved with the two organizations, such as taking a leadership position in Business Council, I have been able to understand many different interests and ultimately have developed a passion for philanthropy. One of College of Business’s greatest aspects is its mission to prepare future leaders of business, education and public service around the world.…

Introduction: Service-learning is a unique way of engaging faculty and students with community partners in structured opportunities to meet educational objectives while addressing community needs .As stated by Bringle and Hatcher, 1995,” service-learning is defined as a “course-based, credit bearing educational experience in which students (a) participate in an organized service activity that meets identified community needs, and (b) reflect on the service activity in such a way as to gain further understanding of course content, a broader appreciation of the discipline, and an enhanced sense of personal values and civic responsibility”(p. 112) .
