Math Observation

Improved Essays
While in the field, I observe math in the morning everyday. Each day that I am in the field, the way in which they learn the material is the same style of lesson. The students use a math book and a math workbook to follow along with the lesson and complete practice problems. Within the book, the order is as follows: a teacher example, a class example, individual practice problems, and then a few “hot” problems to challenge the students once they have finished. So, the lesson that I have decided to focus on was a math lesson on finding the missing side length of squares and rectangles. On this day, it was the first day that they were learning this topic, besides the preview work that they were assigned to take home to work on with their parents.

In this process, the student first solves the problem and verbalizes the processes used, then writes he step-by-step process and identifies it on the model.” (Miles and Forchs, p. 6). While the teacher is helping the student along, he or she can monitor what areas the student might be struggling with. If the teacher is instructing a large classroom, this strategy might be better done in small groups. There is considerable evidence to indicate a that verbalizing upper level math problems has a pos6itive impact.…

Today textbooks just have an example that is similar to the problems students are doing. This does not help the student because they are basically just replacing the numbers and not understanding what the problem is actually asking them. In The Art of Asking Thought Provoking Questions in the Mathematics Classroom, they state how “Besides asking how and why in order to focus on the mathematics behind a procedure, ordinary run-of-the-mill textbook questions can also be modified to target a higher cognitive level” ( Bellido, Walker, and Wayland). This quote is stating how it is more important the understanding the how and why, but to understand the procedures that are behind the problem. In the Ted Talk Math class needs a makeover by Dan Meyer, he states “how in math we don’t problems that prompt to students to stop and think” (Meyer).…

Pop quizzes have always been a dreaded possibility for students. Recently, in writing class, a pop quiz was handed out and many students failed. The point now in question is whether the grade should be put into the gradebook to be held against the class. Through the evidence provided here, it will be undeniable that the grade should not be put in the gradebook. Due to the fact that students were not given time to look over the material on their own, and even the most hard-working students’ grades will be skewed from a quiz in which very few students were able to get a C, is evidence to show the grade should not be counted against the class.…

Successful teachers use this extra time to provide additional explanations, check for student understanding, give many examples, and provide sufficient instruction so that the students can learn to work independently without difficulty. In contrast, the less successful teachers give much shorter presentations and explanations, and then they pass out worksheets and tell students to work on the problems. Under these conditions, the students made many errors and had to be retaught the lesson. It has shown to be very successful to present small amounts of information at a time, followed by lot of guided student practice. This guided practice often consists of the teacher working the first problems at the whiteboard and explaining the reason for each step, which served as a model for the students.…

This week I watched children in the class solve a word problem on the board. I decide that I wanted to observe the students in Math and make a checklist to assess their understanding of the concept skill presented. The students were suppose to master the skill of solving a word problem with pictures and then when they were done, they were to participant in a class discussion on how to solve the problem. With that being said, I decided to compose a checklist to see if students understood how to solve the word problem by observing their communication skills during the class discussion. I was looking to see if the students had the ability to read the problem, understand the problem by knowing which mathematical strategy to use to solve the problem, along with possessing the ability to label the parts of the equation.…

In addition, testing can provide the child with a challenge, which can boost performance and learning. Distributing and interleaving practice We all know the value in the saying, “Practice makes perfect”. When it comes to learning techniques, practice and repetition can be extremely useful. But instead of having the kids solve a single issue before moving to another, the practice should be used in distributive and interleaving manner. What this means is that a single problem is scattered across a short period of time, with different problems scattered across the session.…
