I wish that I could be able to write this journal saying that my experience has been great. Unfortunately, every time I go mentoring I come out of it with a different experience. I had the opportunity to mentor kids here and there while still being able to see my main mentee. The relationship I’ve made with my main mentee has been great and has gown a lot. Other than my mentee I have not formed other relationships. Mrs. Green and I have a very professional relationship, but she definitely makes going to Leon High School a more fun experience with her goof attitude. Typically, one would consider a mentor/mentee relationship only beneficial to the mentee, but I do think I’m learning a lot from my mentor. I’ve learned to try different techniques to getting her excited to do school work. Luckily this two-way relationship is mutually beneficial rather than the mentees being the only individuals getting something out of the program. When we meet she always has work she need help on and we work together until she grasps the concepts. The biggest lesson I’ve learned so far is to not give up on my dream of helping others. I would be lying if I said I didn’t dislike waking up early during the week to go essentially back to high school. Yet, I always end up leaving the school in a great mood. I love helping other, and seeing progress in a student makes me so happy. Last time I saw my mentee, I was having a very difficult week and was struggling a lot. I was doubting my choices to pursue a career in helping individuals with mental health issue. Yet, after helping my mentee understand her math homework I was immediately cheered up. The smallest thing like helping someone understand their math homework brought so much joy to me it reminded me why I care so much about wanting to be a support system for

As I was observing the relationship between the client and his daughter, it made me recall feelings of my relationship with my father. I found myself creating biases to form connections. Through this experience, I realized that I need to learn specific language skills for counselling in Punjabi as well as learn ways of appropriately showing an understanding without the focus on self-involvement. I also found learning about PTSD in older adults and the effective interventions used, such as CBT very useful for future practices. An experience that displayed my ability to mentor was during my time helping out at Columbus Elementary School. There was one boy named Presley and he had trouble focusing, so I often ended up at his table trying to draw his attention away from his peers and towards his work. He was struggling with math, subtraction specifically and heavily relied on finger counting to do any problem. After about two weeks doing number lines and tally marks, he greatly improved and no longer needed any help for simpler subtraction.…

At first glance I didn’t find the her to be troublesome since I had some experience from past tutoring. She wasn’t one of these cases though. I sacrificed my free time to tutor Misha who I later learned was a visual learner who also made me become hesitate to tutor others in the future. I met Misha when I overheard her talking about failing almost all of her academic classes during Technical Theatre. She had a bad habit of last minute cram session with no understanding whatsoever before a test or quiz.…

I am the oldest child. I have two younger siblings who I love unconditionally, but life as the oldest child is not the picnic most people think it is. I know this probably sounds cliché, becoming who I am because of my siblings, but it is the truth without them I would not be the person I am today. When I was four years old my mother became pregnant with my sister. My sister, Madison was born seven months before I turned five.…

When I began Energy Express, I thought my role would be improving children's reading skills and helping them cultivate a passion for reading. However, throughout my summer of service I learned that the role of an Energy Express mentor is much greater. To mentor a child is to shape their personality and future, it is to help them grow to love learning and also to love themselves, it is to offer them hope and love since many children in this area struggle within untraditional family structures, and it is to teach them their potential is endless. Therefore, my three goals would be: cultivate a love for readnig through hands-on activities, provide a support, fun, and active enviroment that welcomes and comforts all children, and to build lasting, stable friendships among the children I mentor.…

The Power of Leadership In every school that exhibits strength, one will see a leader that empowers the staff to achieve their goals. Strong leadership entails one who shares a vision with their staff in order to produce growth for the students. Without a leader, teachers will have to take on many other roles that distract their focus from their daily classroom routines. Furthermore, I believe that a successful school needs a principal to oversee the school culture, provide instructional leadership, and exemplify an understanding of state standards.…
