I am not sure I have changed a ton in this first semester of college. I still really want to teach, and I still believe that special education is where I want to teach. A number of people might say that they are more independent or outgoing now. I had to become independent last year when I was living away from my parents for the school year, so that independence really hasn’t increased in these past few months. I would maybe say that I am more introverted now than before. While I still do not have a problem talking to new people, I am valuing my personal space and alone time a lot more now than I ever did before. I have a variety of close friends here and at home now. Joyell, Kara, and Zach from home and Christy and Rebecca here. I am comfortable with …show more content…
I really like the America Reads program. The opportunity to get into schools so early in my higher education journey is truly priceless. I have the opportunity to work with real kids, trying out learning techniques as I learn them. I am also really enjoying my introduction to special education class. My teacher is a principle at an out of district placement school for students with severe special needs. Learning from her is wonderful. We get to hear about real life challenges. I am not as big of a fan of some of my general education classes. We really aren’t learning a whole lot, so my motivation in them is pretty minimal some days. I also had some intimidating teachers this semester. If you did not do things exactly how they expected you to do them, it did not end well for that class. However, I am not sure I would change a whole lot about UWW. Some little things have bugged me, but I have not noticed a major flaw. Something I would change about the community is having more fun things within walking distance. You can only go Walmart so often. It is hard to do things off campus without having a

I attended several interesting classes including gym, theology, and math. I was even able to participate in Gym and played nitroball and interacted with many of the other students. Theology was different than my CCD class so it was interesting to be in an actual classroom for it. In the math class the topic they were learning about was familiar to me so it was a nice class. Overall the classes were…

I did make a few friends so to say, but it wasn’t the same friends I had back at my old home. I couldn’t really connect with them, so I became very introverted. I would still be the “happy me” where I would laugh and joke about things in class, but when I went home, I would be alone with my homework and video games. Video games really kept me going for 2 years. In this time, I would I would always think that I loved being by myself.…

Learning to write When I attended elementary school, part of the curriculum was penmanship. There was a certain segment of instruction dedicated to penmanship rather than writing. We were given large sheets of oat colored paper with three parallel lines widely spaced. The alphabets were used to print and write in cursive using the midpoint, and upper lines for capital letters. The handwriting grades were based on neatness and readability.…

Through the past semester, I believe my writing has strengthened in skill and individual direction. In a similar manner, as a college freshman learns independence during their first year on campus by living away from home with less guidance, so has my writing skills. Whereas, in high school, our teachers provided us with a uniformed writing prompt with a clear argument or thesis. This semester has provided me with the skill in writing towards a specific audience with a clear position. Through this process, I was rewarded with the opportunity in learning to incorporate my voice in my writing, instead of simply to questions that were posed on a sheet of paper.…

Over the course of the past three weeks, I have had the pleasure of observing and teaching Junior Achievement lessons in Mrs. Kristin Murphy’s second grade classroom at Central Elementary in O’Fallon, Illinois. Through this experience, my instructional skills have grown, and my understanding of and respect for the teaching profession has also been greatly enhanced. In teaching the Junior Achievement lessons, I accomplished many of the goals the program had set, along with several goals that I had in mind for myself. By encouraging the feedback of both the students and Mrs. Murphy, I was able to modify my approach to become a more effective educator.…

The new friends I had were exceptionally different from the others I had for basically two years. What was different about them was that they were much more apt to easy going conversations, as opposed to the more awkward and forced ones of my old acquaintances. However, what did not change was that they were both prone to be judgmental. There was zero chance of them changing what their concept of the social norm was. From the card gaming club to fantasy football trash talking, there was no doubt that these people saw “normality” at polar opposite ends of the social spectrum.…

One of the most complex issues in special education today is disproportionality. Approximately 13.5 percent of all students in schools K-12 receive special education services, however, minority students are receiving special education services at rates that are significantly higher (Disproportionality, 2008). There are higher rates of minorities being placed in special education compared to their counterparts. When focusing on African Americans, they compose 17 percent of all students in the United States, and they account for 41 percent of all children placed in special education (Bolden, 2009). Many African Americans students who are underachievers or display behavioral issues are being identified has having a disability, and are being…

There are many children disabled children in the United States . They show interest in joining regular classrooms, instead of being in separate classes. There are many different types of disabilities, but if all disabled children become more active and interact with other children it will benefit not only the disabled but also the people they interact with . I know this from research and personal experience with family members with disabilities. School boards should put disabled children into regular classrooms and other activities.…
