My personal philosophy on Career and Technical Education (CTE), comes from my life’s professional experience of working in Emergency Medicine and working with CTE programs. I believe that CTE prepares secondary and postsecondary students of all diverse backgrounds to obtain gainful employment and creates an ultimate experience of knowledge and development. I have had the opportunity to work in a CTE field of healthcare for my adult life. I believe there is no better educational system to have real measurable growth for many students than CTE. Many of the students and graduates I have had the opportunity to work with would have never had the chance for personal and financial growth if it were not for a CTE programs.…
During POC #1, I learned through the Focus 2 Career Assessment that I am almost ready to become a nurse. In order for me to become a nurse, I need to become a more social person, either that or fake it! By taking the Focus 2 Carer Assessment, I easily learned a valuable lesson about becoming a nurse, and how I should take my personality into consideration while becoming a nurse. Because I am determined to become a nurse, I am willing to become a more social person; but if I were not willing to become more social, Focus 2 claimed that I would excel quite well in many different types of jobs.…

In essence, Gordon argues that structural factors inherent to career and technical education programs have prevented women from achieving economic equality when compared to their male counterparts. As evidence, Gordon argues that women of the nineteenth century were denied access to endeavors that were seen as traditionally male. Rather, women were provided instruction that focused heavily on domestic or “ornamental” instruction. Beyond the differences in training, women also faced barriers to equal pay that have been supported by both the United States government and private industry. For example, Gordon cites the disparity in pay among government clerks during the Civil War.…

The same technology that gave them control made them feel completely powerless. One operation changed the way humans lived and interacted.…

efforts to prepare career and college ready graduates. Career and technical education is thought to be useful to students because it demonstrates the application of classroom learning in the real word, engages them by using authentic tasks and tools, and teaches them employable skills. While some argue that students who take part in career and technical education are provided opportunities to extend classroom learning and develop critical understating of potential work environments (Brown, 2003; Stern, Rahn, & Chung, 1998), others argue that this type of education decreases the student’s school performance and willingness to enroll in higher lever courses (Hughes, Moore, & Bailey, 1999). However, evidence has shown that career and technical education may be a promising way to increase student’s educational engagement as well as career readiness and attainment (Symonds, Schwartz, & Ferguson, 2011; Alfred, Charner, & Watts, 2013; Darche, Nayar, & Bracco, 2009).…

INTASC Standards: 8, 9 Standard #8 - “The teacher understands and uses formal and informal assessment strategies to evaluate and ensure the continuous intellectual, social and physical development of the learner (Henson, 2009).” As a teacher it is important to use a variety of assessments to evaluate and ensure that students understand and are learning the content presented in the classroom. In addition to giving traditional assessments such as a quiz, exam or paper, alternatives that will be provided include group assessments, self-assessment, portfolios, observations and performance assessments. By applying varied assessment methods a check for understanding of a student’s knowledge will be better assessed since there are limitations with different types of evaluations.…
For example will assessment be initial/pre course, formative, summative or based on recognised prior learning. The assessor will need to decide the methods or activities to be used for assessment such as observations, performance evidence, discussion or witness/learner statement. How knowledge and understanding is going to be assessed also needs careful thought and could include tests, multiple choice questions, written assignment/task, a reflective journal, verbal questioning or naturally occurring evidence, all of which need to be fit for purpose and relate to the learner’s specific needs. Further considerations for assessment planning are to determine who will be assessing the learning/learner and how progress will be monitored and reviewed following feedback. 3.2 Evaluate the benefits of using a holistic approach to…

Although I had heard about career assessments, I never had the opportunity to take one myself. Therefore, I took great joy in experiencing these activities for the first time. These different assessments contributed to a deeper understanding of my skills and personality. In what follows, I discuss my reactions to the different career assessments that were presented during our class.…
