My Rhetorical Analysis

Organization is an integral part of writing an essay. Without organization, ideas will be jumbled and the argument will be unclear. As a writer in English 101, I learned how to structure my essays and how to organize my thoughts in a way that strengthens my arguments. English 101 greatly helped me advance as a writer. Before this class, I would never add my own voice into my papers; however, throughout the course of the semester, I learned to draw from my own experiences and integrate those experiences into my support. Every essay that was assigned was easier to write than the one before; therefore, my writing abilities and strategies have immensely improved. Overall, as a writer in English 101, I have improved on my previous writing strategies …show more content…
While, I did develop a strong thesis that was structured correctly, my support for that argument was lacking. One main weakness throughout this paper was that I did not develop on my ideas. I wrote about how logos was the most utilized rhetorical device that the author used; however, I did not expand on this idea. I did not explain well enough how logos contributed to the central argument more so than any other rhetorical strategy. I also took the easy route on this paper. I found and used very obvious examples of logos, pathos, and ethos that provided weak support for my claim. On this first essay, I learned that taking the easiest route does not produce the best outcome, but a more original route leads to more satisfactory …show more content…
While I started to incorporate my voice into the previous papers, I did not fully understand the benefits of doing so. This essay allowed for me to support my thesis about the American Dream with my own experiences since the thesis was essentially my own definition of the American Dream; furthermore, I realized how my experiences would help strengthen my argument and my voice. I also was successful in adding outside sources in my essay that would support my claim. Before, I always stuck with the sources provided to me, but with this essay, I added outside sources that strengthened my argument. In addition, I did not take the typical side for this paper. The side that I took was not supported by many of the articles assigned in class; therefore, my outside research was integral to my essay. Overall, I learned how to draw from sources I was given while also using outside articles to support my argument. While I had many strengths, I also had a few weaknesses. I tended to repeat the same ideas throughout my essay by using different wording. I feel like I need to expand on my ideas more, which I achieved in the next

This leaves little to no room for actual credibility to be added. There is an extreme appeal to pathos, but almost no appeal to logos. This is surprising coming from an author that is highly educated and has contributed much to the science community. Lastly, one of the biggest flaws of this piece comes into play at the conclusion. As Eisley tries to tie his writing back to his introduction, he chooses one of the weakest aspects, again citing a memory not many others can relate…

Rather he allows his audience to imply what he really is saying. He does attempt to give reasoning to persuade his audience but it is ineffective. An example of the logos’ ineffectiveness can be found in the connection/flow between paragraphs one and two. In paragraph one he states the deaths that happened in new haven, identifies his unfamiliarity with them and then states a probable reasoning that doesn’t contain the required credibility in this situation (Sinha, 2014). In paragraph 2, he provides statistics on deaths that happen during residency.…

Over the course of English 102, I have developed a new set of skills and learned to become a better writer. When I first came into English 102 I struggled with many different concepts of writing. During the semester in English 102, my writing became stronger because I learned how to incorporate evidence into my argument, do more thorough research, have smoother transitions, and have more organization throughout my essay. I learned how to peer review better and to take what others say and incorporate it into my essay. In the beginning, before English 102, I struggled with good organization and flow to an essay, sandwich evidence into paragraphs, and having strong arguments in persuasive essays.…

English composition was never my strong nor favorite because of my knowledge of the grammar and organization in my writing. Taking English 101 is a jump start for me, because last year of high school my teacher focused primarily on English literature. The course has introduced me to rhetorical analysis, and swatching (imitating author argument). Throughout the semester and all of the papers written I can say that it was a good experience to write at a college level and the expectation from college professors is good for future courses that involve writing essays.…

She wants the audience to realize that they must support women because women do many important jobs that make everyday a possibility.…

Throughout the writing process, I thoroughly researched to prove my point of view and it made my paper highly effective. More importantly, I was able to determine mistakes that I would not have seen before. For example, I found each statement that I had written that was vague and gave background to each one. Also, my word choice, once again, was improved. A truly impressive aspect of my essay is my skills in organization.…

Throughout this semester of English 101, writing has become more of a skill than a struggle. Writing was a challenge that I dreaded when I chose to be in the course, nonetheless with time, I learned from my mistakes and was able to improve. This course made me very doubtful on whether I could be capable of even writing a paper that would provide me with a decent grade, but at the same time made me push myself in my writing technique. In the end, I can reflect that I learned from my mistakes and wrote papers that took time and dedication to accomplish. I learned from this class to be confident in my writing and make all the mistakes to receive the grade I want in the end.…

I appreciate this chance to share with you my academic journey in English 101 and also thank you for taking your time to read my letter. Although I am a freshman who just placed my very first step on college journey and also one of the few ESL students in the class, I did not take this as a discouragement to complete and pass this course with a good grade. Still, I have to admit that English 101 is challenging and difficulty at some level for me but it helps me to develop my skills in writing and critical thinking. During this course, I was having difficulty brainstorming the pieces in my mind into a complete and organized argumentative essay. It took me a lot of time choosing ideas and put everything on my mind constructively onto the paper.…
