My Reflection At Governor's School

It is a well-known fact that humans are social creatures. From birth, we are conditioned to rely on others for food and safety. As we become more independent, relationships are vital for knowledge, other perspectives and general happiness. For me, the importance of human connections was emphasized at Governor’s School this past summer. For me, Governor’s School became a home away from home. I do not regret giving up half my summer for more school. I do not regret getting up at 7:30 almost every morning, and I do not regret being away from my bed for 5.5 weeks. There are a number of things regarding this past summer that I am satisfied with, but there is one chance that I feel as though I missed. When the session first began, our site director told us about the “window of opportunity”. It is described as the two week period at the beginning of camp where no one is really familiar with anyone; therefore, people are extremely open to conversations and unfamiliar people. “The window of opportunity never …show more content…
Making clocks, complaining about lack of running water, and hanging out on the quad created enough common ground to bond with other students. Unfortunately, there was only a week or two left and I did not become as close as I would have liked to with numerous people. I wish I could have met many people earlier than I did; time was easily my worst enemy during those closing weeks of camp. If I could do anything over again, it would be Governor’s School for the sole purpose of connecting to my peers on a deeper level. I am grateful for the friends that I did make, but I cannot help but feel that I missed many chances to gain new perspectives. Through this experience, I have learned to socialize with complete strangers and take social risks more often outside of camp. I am confident that I will carry this lesson with me to college, creating meaningful relationships in the classroom and

Moreover, as Jupp (2013) describes in his concluding chapter, a narrative of “relationality...presents teachers’ needs for direct relationships with students, families, communities, and social agencies” (p. 105). In my understanding, through deeply ingrained relationships one can take away powerful information on the life and needs of the learner which can be instrumental in providing a clearer picture of the incidental. Moreover, a snapshot of the individual students’ life and how it can be critically evaluated towards the overall structures without placing undue blame on the student or their family and likewise draw incorrect conclusions. This also provides a good point of transition for exploring the methods of combating such deficit…

A student’s class is undeniably the central component in his or her social landscape. Students first learn how to connect and effectively communicate with human beings in the classroom when they are grouped together with other children their age. Almost every person’s best friends, social bonds, and romantic interests have been defined by socialization within the school he or she attended. Even homeschooled children regularly meet for outings and “play dates” in order to stimulate social development. The ability to interact, interview, and communicate with other people is important in countless aspects throughout life, especially employment, reproduction, and the sake of personal happiness.…

An experience that changed my life forever was coming to Northwest Christian for high school. Before I attended Northwest I spent all of elementary school and middle school at Rancho Solano. Although my time there was great, it was taught in a strictly academic worldview. Then during my eighth grade year, I made the decision to enroll in Boulder Creek High School. I began to get nervous because of the change in size, but then I started to embrace the idea of change.…

I spent six of my summers growing up at an all girls camp called Wavus. Wavus is a wilderness tripping camp in Maine based out of my hometown, Jefferson. Living in Jefferson, I did not obtain a great deal of exposure to other people from the country, let alone other parts of the world. When I went to Wavus I was put in a cabin with girls from all over the United States and even one from Belgium. Having to live with these girls for a month each summer enabled me to become close friends with them and learn about their lives.…

Camp Widjiwagan was one of the best camps I’ve been to complete with fun and new learning experiences from the new and different people, to all the activities they had, to my overall outcome at the end of the week. Knowledge is nothing without someone to share it with, so meeting new people and bonding over mutual interests and the desire to be educated is one of the best parts of any summer program. I can remember meeting Julia, and it was almost like I had already imagined her and knew who she was before she introduced herself. Julia is from La Masica, Atlantida, Honduras. Julia came to the United States for school several years ago but she goes back to Honduras every summer, and I just wish she would take me with her. I could hear the stories about her three brothers and two sisters all day long.…
