Real Life Examples

As a high-school student, many people ask where and what I will be doing with my future. This is not what most students or people like to hear. Luckily for them, I know exactly how to answer. Taking psychology this semester has really opened my eyes to myself. In this paper I will be reflecting on my childhood memories and the goals that I have for my future. Using real-life examples, I will demonstrate how psychological theories have impacted my life past, present, and future. As a young child I grew up in a strong authoritarian household. My parents expected me to follow rules just because that was what was being asked of me. There was a lot of me asking questions and my parents using the classic “because I’m your parent” and “unquestioned obedience”. (Rathus, 2010, p. 288) This led me in a negative direction. I wore the same clothes as her, embarrassingly, a t-shirt, ripped boot-cut jeans, and tennis shoes. Of course I also had to have the same hair style and had to be as tom-boy as I could just so I could be her clone. This use of modeling lasted until sometime around freshman year. This stage was not so positive in the long-run because there was no room for finding myself. Being self-aware and self-loving was not a thought that even crossed my mind. Luckily, I found my unique self around the time of high school and am very happy with who I am and who I’m going to be. Today I have an idea of what I would like my ego to look like. This aspect of personality isn’t perfectly balanced, but one of my goals is to finally get there. Somewhere between id and superego I will find my happiness. I think that Fraud was up to good things. In addition, I have lots of stress. Instead of letting stressors block me from self-actualization, my goal is to use stress at motivation. I hope that someday challenges will be my friend.
