My Reading History

Stage One: Your reading history and practice Besides what you had to read for school, how much did you read growing up? I did have any habits of reading. I have not done that much reading when I was growing up, even in French. As I mention before, I started learning, speaking, reading, and writing in English on the second of September 2014, when I went to South African. Even before that, reading was not something I really like to do. My reading experiences are from the past two and a half years. In the Winter break 2015, one of the rare books I fully read was Holes by Louis Sachar. From then, I find an interest in reading. Besides readings for school, what sorts of things did you (and do you still) typically read? Indicate …show more content…
It is not as flexible as reading on paper. I feel like reading on screen is mostly good for scheming the reading. The same way when you read a paper on a screen and it is difficult to catch a grammatical error, the same way I can not easily grasp the content of the reading. Reading on screen could have advantages in reducing the weight of the book I need for a class. Laptops or phones are lighter and we are use to carry them all days long —mostly phones. Moreover, reading on phones’ screens is way harder than reading on laptops screens. I believe that if the option of reading on paper was out of choice, I would rather read on my …show more content…
The light in the room was off. I also decided to lean on my bed because I felt tired. My desktop screen was still on but I was not focused on it. At the same time I was reading, I used my phone, mostly for translating some words I did not understand. At the beginning of the reading, I was bored because the author started talking about situations that happened in the past. However, couple of lines down the text, I felt revive. I was more interested in what he was saying about how digital reading is not as bad as people make it seems. I felt therefore encouraged to further explore the reading. Because I was on my bed, I used a clipboard to hold my paper reading. I still had my yellow highlighter and the black pen, I used in the previous reading. At a certain point, I was thinking about stopping the reading and going to take a shower; but I did not and I convinced myself to finished reading and then go to the

My family wasn’t around a lot when I was younger. My mom and dad both worked full time jobs, and the age gap between my sisters and I made it hard for us to enjoy spending time together. I’ve always felt that the big age gap between me and everyone in my family always affected our closeness. They all seemed so grown up, understanding things that I had yet to grasp, and doing things that I wasn't able to do. I longed to be able to be as grown up as the rest of my family.…

I became literate at a very young age around one or two years old and people could understand what I wanted. For example, bolitas (meant balls in Spanish) cooked beans and no bolitas was refried beans. I had a way of commutating with my family but sometimes I would forget what the word was and I used to describe the item itself. They would eventually understand what I mean. Unlike one of the cases in Deborah Brandt’s Sponsors of Literacy, I did not have a tutor or anything like that.…

I saw you posted that, but it was so long… I didn’t read it.” The Internet has destroyed my capacity for long-term memory, because my brain confidently assumes that “I can just look it up later.” Hours spent flitting through Google and Wiki-Wandering, enjoyable as they may be, have done nothing for my ability to sit down and read a quality source from start to finish. I lament my negligible concentration span, and my inability to just sit and read, for the only way I can really dive into a book anymore is if I shut off my phone, computer, and iPad; effectively quarantining myself from the temptation of the Internet.…

Having been homeschooled for the first twelve years of my life, I had a rather untraditional childhood. While my friends were required to go to school from 6:20 in the morning to 3:30 in the afternoon, I was at home studying or on a field trip to some relevant lecture, the library, or a museum. Because of this less rigid environment, I usually had a lot of time available to me in addition to my school time. Using this excess time for my own personal interests, I developed a penchant for reading at an early age.…

With that being said I do remember some memories, some are good and also bad.…

When I was a little girl I use to hate reading, it’s not that it was hard I just didn’t want to take the time to read and build up my knowledge. As I grew up I started liking reading more, then I had gotten to Chase middle I did so much reading that when I read a good book I couldn’t put it down I had to read it until the end. Reading was something I was practically raised on as a child. My dad made sure that my younger sister and I were read to every single night before he tucked us in, passing down a tradition that he believed had aided in shaping his own childhood. I distinctly remember my simple mind roaming along in the lands of Narnia and Middle Earth as such books instilled in me a restless sense of adventure and a longing to learn. This longing drove me to read more and more on my own, all the while my father continued to read to me at a higher and more complex level, that at the time seemed unattainable. Yet books to me were journies completely separate from my own world and I could never seem to envision them as anything more than a source of entertainment.…

In seventh grade, my reading experience went farther downhill. The teacher expected us to do projects reflecting over what we had read every time we finished a book, with a minimum of five per trimester. I hated doing these reflection projects, so my quantity of reading fell further to just five books every three months. However, the final nail in the coffin of my reading came in eighth grade. On the first day of school, the teacher informed us that the only genre we would be allowed to read for out reading logs, which were unnecessarily complicated, was nonfiction.…
