Reflective Essay On Education And Literacy

As I reflect on what formed me I realized that I have evolved overtime into an avid reader as a result of my early environment and the encouragement of almost every elder in my family. My family instilled in me the conditions of absorbing literature in which I became interested in reading. Over time my teachers built on that foundation, training my skills and encouraging me to read even more text. I recall specific events that truly set the foundation and more conditions where I began to see my literacy evolve, which I will reflect upon. Ultimately this has caused me to become a very selective reader. I will attempt to discuss the conditions, influences and causes, which have brought me to the level at which I am able to read and communicate …show more content…
Commercial images make us believe that a child’s first experience with the alphabet or number system begins after their first day of school, which is somewhere around the age of 5. However, for a number of kids who tend to exceed the average learning in the early school years, their education actually began in the household. But I can’t prove how early learning for many kids who land in the 90th percentile started reading way before they went to their first day of kindergarten. What I can show is that my family
I believe my family has been responsible for my literacy from day one. They provided the foundation for me to find an interest in reading. They encouraged reading whether it was passively or aggressively. I recall being told to turn off the tv or stop playing and told to go read. I remember being told to stop reading to come and eat. But reading was always encouraged. There was never a ban on literature. If I could read it and comprehend the words, then I was allowed to read

But how many times do we consider that literacy begins in the womb, and the foundation of literacy are actually be set in stone inside the household. In my essay, I will discuss the changes I have made over the past few years and also what it would be like to not be able to read, and the effect it would have on us. Starting from fourth grade leading on to eleventh grade now. When I first started off as a reader, I struggled very much, I was not a very fluent reader, I could not read out loud, and I stuttered very much. My parents and my teacher recommended a class, that would help with the problems I had with reading. Starting in the fourth grade, I would go to a class for an hour that would help with my speech and of course the problems I had with reading.…

Prior to opening Content Area Reading: Literacy and Learning Across the Curriculum (Vacca et al., 2014), I had never thought of literacy as something that was vital to a high school math class. I was under the assumption that math was comprised of working through problems with students to find the solution, but I now recognize that there is greater knowledge to teach and learn. Chapter one of Content Area Reading opened my eyes to the importance of teaching content literacy. A study conducted by Harold Herder (1964) demonstrates this point, for he found that “students who used ‘study guides’ to read a physics text significantly outperformed those students who did not use guides to read the content under study”(Vacca, 2014, p. 18). Students who were assisted in understanding how to read the material comprehended a greater amount of what they were reading.…

“Everyone is a reader… Some just haven’t found their favorite book yet.” I remember how I used to like playing with my electric car or bike and especially caring about collecting the hot wheels cars collection. Like any child at this age, all he cares about is jumping around on sofas, running through doors and breaking stuff and walking on it. But here comes the dream breakers who are our literacy sponsors.…

Learning to read is a skill many can obtain quickly or not so well. Myself, on the other hand was one of the many children who struggled with not only the thought of reading, but the actual process of reading not only a book, but sentences, word and sounding out words. Struggling through elementary with reading problems and on and off again help made it seem even worse. Going into kindergarten was intimidating, with all the bright colored posters with words even I couldn’t read. Having to be assigned seats next to strangers who soon would become my closest friends.…

My kindergarten and 1st grade teachers taught me the words that were going to be needed throughout my vocabulary and expressed how reading can be engaging and primary. My mother would always read me different stories that inspired me no matter what kind they were. Her stories taught me the importance of life and things that would apply later on down in life. Reading and writing have impacted my life in numerous ways; in fact, reading books has impacted my life by expanding my vocabulary. My mother would read difficult books to expose me to broad new words to me at a young age. She would also have me study dictionaries, and continuously give me spelling test. When I got a little older I would start to read books on my own. I would read books that opened up my imagination; such as the series, The Magic Tree House.…

Reading and writing is everywhere in this world and as teachers we must push our students to understand literacy no matter what content we are teaching. Literacy is included in all subjects, it might not be the main source of a certain subject but it is important in every subject. Other teachers might not understand that literacy is needed for every course that they teach. In the article Literacy and Language as Learning in Content-Area Classes: A Departure From "Every Teacher a Teacher of Reading" Douglas Fisher and Gay Ivey explains why literacy is important in every subject. Just like learning to walk or ride a bike, learning to read is one of life’s milestones. However, unlike walking and biking, reading skills are not suddenly obtained and then static throughout life. After learning to read initially, an individual’s reading skills, interests, and purposes further develop and change throughout their life. Furthermore, the means by which an individual improves their reading capabilities change over time as well. In the same way, I initially improved my reading ability and changed my interests through the help of my parents, then later my teachers, and finally, in spite of a dark period of little improvement, through my own effort.…
