At the beginning of my sophomore year, I sought a change in my curriculum. Having attended Furman University already for one full year, I affirmed my educational plans had grown since arriving at the South Carolina university. My pursuit in psychology faced a dilemma due to my desire to fulfill my passion for something new. Transferring to Clark University allowed for my journey to begin and flourish with the conjunction of both educational paths in psychology and the study of law. When I arrived at Clark in the winter of 2013, I had little experience with the field of law, criminal justice, or criminology. However, the philosophy course I took a semester prior gave me a proper mindset to identify the societal issues regarding the criminal justice system further on in my education. Throughout the semester, we have repeatedly discussed statistics regarding current crime and incarceration rates. In comparison to previous rates, from earlier decades, it is clear that society’s viewpoint on crime has changed significantly. Beginning in the early 1970s, the United States initiated a more punitive criminal justice system (1). In The Punishment Imperative, authors Todd R. Clear and Natasha A. Frost created a concept for the reasoning behind this mass incarceration. Referred to as the “Punishment Imperative,” its basis for reasoning focused on the symbolic image that crime held in society; meaning, as crime rates grew, the societal fear for basic safety began to emerge.…

Crime and Criminality One of the first courses that I took when I started college was Introduction to Criminal Justice. We talked about a little bit of everything, including what we discussed in class; measurement, victimization, theories of criminality, violent crime, punishment, and more. This Criminology course expanded my knowledge on crime and criminality in many aspects. The Uniform Crime Report (UCR), National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS), stalking, punishment and its consequences, and the solutions for a better justice system helped to learn how the system works, and how it can improve. This may sound like a lack of education, but this is the first college semester that I learn the most about the reality of the criminal justice…

No one knows what the criminal justice system will look like in the year 2050, but most of us who are involved in it have a pretty good idea. The growth of minorities, terrorism, technological improvements, and globalization will make the field somewhat different than it is today. The increasing number of minorities, especially Hispanics, will be the reason of some of the major changes. In 2010, Hispanics were guessed to make up approximately 15.5% of this country’s population and by 2050, this number is expected to rise to 25% (McNamara & Burns, 2009). The African-American population is on the rise also, as their percentage is supposed to rise from 13.1% to 14.6% by 2050 (McNamara & Burns, 2009).…

In 1985 marijuana was marked as the nation’s “number one problem” when it came to drug abuse. More people started using excessive amounts of marijuana since there was a decriminalization law. Eventually, it reached a high of sixty-four percent; programs and treatments were brought upon such as D.A.R.E (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) and G.R.E.A.T (Gang Resistance Education and Training). These programs were not just for adults, these were mainly targeted towards the youth so they will be pushed in the right direction.…
