My Pursuit Of Family Law

Decent Essays
I decided to major in Pre-Law, specifically Family Law to earn a Bachelor’s Degree. My goal is to become a family lawyer that focuses on representing clients in the areas of divorce, domestic violence, and child issues. When I was young, I sadly witnessed domestic violence in my home. My mother had three children by the time she was twenty-three years old and she was married to my father who was abusing drugs at the time. We lived in a tiny apartment together and I still remember their fights. My father would beat my mother in front of us and my mom often fought back as well. I recall one incident when my dad hit me. My mom began to back up from him while still yelling then dad grabbed a glass cup off the table next to him and whipped it in the direction of my mother, the cup hit the wall behind her, shattering into many small pieces and leaving a small hole in the wall. We all went silent at this point. I stood there shocked at what had happened scared at that fact that my father might have just tried to hurt my mother. All of our anger at each other suddenly became remorse for the situation that had just occurred. To this day, that is the only time my father has ever attempted to physically hurt someone in my family out of anger.…

One of my beliefs that could be in conflict with a social work value or ethical standard is my feeling towards the people that decide to stay in a domestic violence relationship. I believe that no one should get abused in a relationship. A couple should stay in a relationship because they are in love and not because they do not have the financial resources to be on there own or fear for their lives. Domestic violence to me consists of physical, emotional, psychological, and financial abuse.…

Monday, August 22nd, 2016, approximately 10 o’clock PM. I arrived home after a typical summer night out with my friends at the local Applebee’s, however I was greeted at the door by my already enraged father. Before I had time to take my shoes off of my feet, my father was already ridiculing me, spouting phrases such as “you’re so irresponsible” and “you cannot be trusted with anything.” Now of course there was some foul language included sporadically in those remarks, but overall I was shocked at why I was being attacked seemingly unprovoked. My father then decided to inform me that tomorrow at 8 AM I had to report to the soccer fields at Holy Ghost Preparatory School for soccer tryouts.…

Love can definitely be one the strongest emotions an individual may feel throughout their lifetime. At one end it can be like a drug which has you floating endlessly on a cloud, on the other end it can be an anchor, pulling you down with all its might forcing you to drown. The social proverb love is blind can be interpreted as many things, one of which being that when an individual loves someone else they tend to not have the ability to see fault or flaws in the one that they love. In turn the individual being “blind” to the flaws within the relationship are bound to stay which can be detrimental. I am the youngest son of my mother’s six children. My experience with alcoholism begins in that I being forty seven years old, grew up watching my mother and father drink every day from as far back as I can remember. Alcohol seemed to be a part of everything we did from a weekend picnic at the park, to going to see the grandparents, someone drinking and getting drunk was the norm for me since a very young age. By the time I was eight, drinking had drove a wedge between my parents and they were heading down an ice covered slope towards divorce court. My parents separated, and for many years my mother was always at a tavern.…
