My Pursuit Of Ethnography

I am applying to the Geography undergraduate program because of my recent interest in human-land relationships. My main goal for applying to this department is to pursue a career in cartography. My dad and I go to this motorcycle museum in the hill-country where all walks of life go in the late winter/ early spring months because of the American food and the Aussie owner. One specimen I was lucky enough to speak with relived his glory days as a geoscientist in Greenland. We did not have much time to talk about specifics, but I did have time to ask how I could get in on that worldly experience action so I too could have KILLER stories to tell when I am old and gray/grey (he spells it with an e). Again no specifics, but after a little research, …show more content…
With a field as demanding as childcare, I have to be extremely organized and manage my time advantageously in order to accomplish everything that must be done. The children like being on a schedule and it helps me and my fellow teachers tremendously. Three meals a day, diaper changes, projects, outside play, and circle time would not be possible if we didn’t use all the extra time we squeeze out of the school day. Sure, everyone needs a break, but if you think that I waste 2 hours of nap time on relaxing, you are mistaken. If I am not working on school work, I am using that precious time to prepare stuff for work. whether it be cutting out paper for projects, charting all feedings, naps as well as attendance, or stuffing Friday folders to give to the parents, something is getting done. If I want to excel in all aspects of each activity and course I take (I am currently enrolled half time at my university), I have to use each free moment I get to my advantage. In order to dothat, I need to know what needs to be done, and when it needs to be done by WAY before it needs to be done so that I may plan accordingly. It takes these small steps to make ensure that (almost) everything runs as smooth as I am able to make it. That being said, I do, unfortunately, fall short sometimes despite my efforts and a new lesson is learned. But at least I can say that I give my all and I can live with

EVALUATION After having my Music Teacher Susie suggest recording an album for my Music Individual Study, I modified the idea to an EP in order to fit time constraints and increase the quality of the songs. R2 This goal was of particular interest to me as I am interested in the recording process and want to do it later in life. I wrote, recorded and produced an EP consisting of five tracks with a cover and booklet. I journaled this process in order to display my progress and development and personally reflect on it.…

Native American agriculture and ethnobotany have been an essential component of their survivability following the Hunter-Gatherer era. Specifically for Southern California Native Americans, ethnobotany and agriculture plays an integral role in Native American culture through their religion, their constant migration and their overall daily routines, this demonstrates an agriculture-centric society, however, with the arrival and influence of the Spaniards and Americans, this relationship between the Native Americans and their agriculture has shifted negatively. Plants and the environment played an important role in Native-American culture. Firstly, the Native American religion featured the importance of plants and animals in their mythology…

Arterial diameter, diffusion distance, and proportion of wrapping were manually measured for vessel pairs that were matched in both the light micrographs and micro-CT images in a blinded manner. Artery-vein pairs were identified, matched in both micro-CT and light microscopy images, and then labelled. Measurements were first made for the artery-vein pairs in the light micrographs. Then, measurements were made for the artery-vein pairs in the micro-CT images. A total of 25 vessel pairs were identified across two kidney volumes.…

The experience that I went through and that I would like to share was when I played golf in the beginning of the year. I was fine managing my schedule during the first week or two of school, but then I started getting more and more homework as the weeks went on. I had a hard time keeping up with my school work and playing golf. I practiced every day after school and I didn’t really have any time after school to do my homework. Playing golf took up basically all of my time because I played it 5-7 days a week between practicing with the school team or practicing with my golf instructor/coach.…

Partograph is a graphical tool for recording and monitoring progress of the labor which was devised by Friedman in 1954 and improved by Philpott in the 1970s. It has three parts; foetal condition part, labour progress monitoring part and maternal condition part which are monitored and recorded during labour. A partograph should be started on women in active labour (when cervix is dilated 4cm, who have no complications that require immediate action, (Dutta 2013). Partograph helps midwives to monitor progress of labor by detecting abnormal labour, to indicate when augmentation of labour is appropriate and recognize cephalopelvic disproportion and know when to take appropriate actions. Partograph serves as an early warning system and assist in…

Applied anthropologists work in different careers, domains, and projects in the public and private sector. The expertise that anthropologists have in dealing with individuals and the understanding of humans and culture have made them an ideal candidate to work with various publics, communities, and different environments. My first image, which conveyed detail, depicted a banquet being served on the Dean Dome basketball court. I chose to use this image for several reasons, including its repetitiveness, unique color, and relative uniformity. Although many of my classmates chose to photograph minute details of a single subject, such as a piece of wood or stream of running water, I found that this photograph was more expressive of detail in a much larger subject. When taking this photo, I intended to capture as many people as possible with a maximal amount of clarity. This would allow my audience to view the scene as a whole before zooming in to study each individual.…

By the time this is submitted, it would be the fourth week of school. I think it is timely that this journal is centered around time management since this is the period our midterms begin and hence, would be a good measure for how well we have been managing our time. As someone who is easily stressed, I find that staggering mammoth tasks and planning a timetable does aid in managing stress. Personally, I use a timetable as a guide but I do not stick to it religiously.…

Ethnography is a participant-observer qualitative research method which involves an integrative analysis of behaviors, values, and patterns of interaction within a specific culture-sharing group (Creswell, 2013). It is a method that stems from cultural anthropology and sociology, wherein the researcher spends extended periods of time as a participant in the group of study, interviewing, observing, and sharing their cultural experiences. According to Creswell (2013), the process of ethnography begins with questions related to problems of the group, followed by systematic observations, detailed descriptions, coding, and finally synthesizing the data with theoretical foundations, artifacts, journals, or other data, used to interpret meaning.…

    V. Methodology and Methods To accomplish this ethnographic study, I propose using a mixed method approach for data collection to identify and assess educational strategies and learning environments that promote empathy and metacognition. Ethnography is appropriate because it focuses on understanding the patterns of a cultural group that may include values, beliefs and interactions (Creswell, 2007). Measurement Tools I would like to employ three measurement tools: 1. The Social Empathy Index as formulated by Segal (2011). This model outlines three components—interpersonal empathy, contextual understanding and social responsibility.…

While reading both of my articles a short fictional story “The Ethnographer” by Jorge Luis Brogues came to my mind. In the story an indecisive college student with nothing singular is motivated by one of his advisors to conduct participant observation with a tribe to decode the secrets of their medicine man. On his return the university promised him to publish his work. He fully emerges on the lifestyle of the tribe and after two years the secret was reveal. On his return he refuses to publish his findings, because he believes the frivolity of the scientific techniques are not worth of the beautiful secret.…

Data collection and analysis methods are well known that directly affect the successful outcome of any research (Bamkin, Maynard, & Goulding, 2016). The use of grounded theory with ethnography combined can give a clear answer to the research question. Ethnographic can describe the lived experience of those who suffered from toxic leadership while the grounded theory can explain why these events occurred. Both methods will provide a greater deal of detail than one approach can provide alone (Bamkin, Maynard, & Goulding, 2016). More recently, the grounded theory ethnography has begun to build momentum and gain popularity among qualitative researchers (Babchuk, & Hitchcock, 2013).…
