My Protein Synthesis Analogy: A Softball Team

Decent Essays
My protein synthesis analogy is a softball team. My analogy is about the softball team playing defense (in the field) not offense (up to bat). The nucleus is the dugout because the coach is in it and the players exit and enter it. The DNA is the coach because he makes all the plays and decides the lineup, or everyone’s position in the field. The mRNA is the catcher, who receives the signal from the coach and sends it to the pitcher and the other fielders. The ribosome/rRNA is the pitcher because she carries out the play by throwing a pitch, which also binds all the players around her together. The tRNA is the shortstop, who sees the signal from the catcher and moves the other fielders/addresses the play. The amino acids are all the other fielders

Playing sports has always been my passion, I love everything about it. But one thing has always stood in my way; my size. I’ve never been the tallest person in a crowd and most of the time I am one of the shortest people in the room. I never imagined that this could hold me back from something that I love so much and could possibly make my dreams of playing collegiate softball unreachable. I first began playing softball at only five years old.…

    5. Ribosomes are involved in protein synthesis, in other words they create proteins. 6. mRNA attaches one end to a ribosome, and through codons, tRNA brings in amino acids and attaches them together to form a specific protein polymer. Codons code for amino acids, and are "triplets" of code.…

Darwin’s Radio by Greg Bear follows three people after a million-year old retrovirus begins showing up in the human population. The book opens in the Alps, with Mitch Rafelson, a discredited anthropologist trekking the mountains with two other travelers in search of human “mummies”, which he identifies as Neanderthals. He manages to procure samples of the remains before having to turn back due to health issues and weather conditions. The other two die, but the deformed mummy baby is found in the backpack of the woman he travelled with.…

While pitcher two tended to go way left of the plate from his point of view (inside for a left-handed batter). I also noticed pitcher three tended to go to the upper right area of the strike zone. The last thing I looked at were the results. I calculated ball the batted ball stats for each pitcher, specifically calculating the Line Drive Percentage (LD%), Fly Ball Percentage (FB%) and Ground Ball Percentage (GB%). These stats showed that pitcher one had the highest GB% and the lowest LD%.…

These ribosomes move through the mRNA to generate new subunits of proteins. tRNA and mRNA sequences interact through codons and anticodons and tRNA is what brings amino acids for the use of the ribosomes in translation; therefore, amono acids continue to be made as long as there is availability of resources until a stop codon is hit which is what stops the translation. Different types of amino acids are made for different things; therefore, naturally, these types of amino acids must be made through the process of translation. Through the use of a simple chart of genetic code triplets, it is possible to find out which coding sequences of mRNA correspond to which amino acids; therefore, it is easy to see the outcome of translation without actually diving into genes. Sixty four total codons exist that correspond to polypetides and…

Sixty miles per hour is the speed at which the average softball player throws the ball; so I guess you could say I was in the wrong place at the wrong time, but I believe I was exactly where I was supposed to be. You know how some people say there was a certain moment that changed their life completely? Well, this was that moment for me, and it all was caused by a miscommunication. Miscommunications happen all of the time, but with a softball that isn't actually soft, and someone standing only 30 feet away from you; well you can already see the implications. At the time, I didn't see what was going to unfold, but I had a bad feeling about what was to come.…

Throughout this life full of temporaries, one thing that has stayed constant is the game of softball. Between watching my sister play and playing myself- I grew up on a softball field. When I was finally old enough to begin playing, it started as just another fun after-school activity; little did I know it would soon take over my life. I went from rec league to playing competitive travel league softball. As I got older, my main goal was to make the Boyle County Middle School softball.…

Several people often misconceive softball as being an effortless, female dominated sport that requires little to no skill. Some say that softball is just a sport in which you hit the ball and run through bases trying not to get out. People who have never played softball, let alone any other sport, will say that softball is made easier for females. Before I began to play softball, I too speculated that softball was one of the most basic sports there was. Speaking from experience, softball is quite challenging and tiresome.…
