Importance Of Professional Code Of Ethics

My professional code of ethics comes from a multitude of locations and areas in my life but mostly I have learned a lot from my family and former peers in the workforce. Learning a lot from families and peers in the workplace can have its benefits because I have a code of ethics for my personal and professional life. I also have a code of ethics that has varied from one job to the next because some jobs require more ethics then others. I remember years ago when I was a telemarketer I actually had access to numerous social security numbers, addresses and personal information that if I wasn’t an honest person could have been a major problem. I also ran numerous credit checks and had to try to sell products which were always difficult at times …show more content…
I believe integrity in the professional world is very crucial and allows the person to have a good reputation in the professional world. Professional integrity means that you will strive to work in an honest manner and be a reliable person within your professional realm (Institute of New Zealand, 2015). My ethical ground work for integrity started with my father who was an honest and reliable worker all his career and I have always strived to live up to my father’s memories. He always told me that ensuring you were honest in your job, ensured you were doing your work to the best of your ability and are a reliable employee with deadlines and showing up for work then you will be a valued …show more content…
Ensuring that you stand up for what is right takes courage but it also maintains your ethical philosophies. Courage means you set aside the fear of the unknown reprisal or displeasure of a superior but setting aside the fear of the unknown and standing up for what you believe in takes courage (Putnam, 2003). This I learned from a nurse that worked in the emergency room she always stood up for the rights and wellbeing of her patients. I saw her stand up to a multitude of superiors for the rights of her patients. The fact she stood up to doctors, the chief nursing officer and the administrator always amazed me but I always felt that she did the right thing and admired her courage. This is why I added courage to my list of my professional code of ethics because I have always tried to strive to do the right thing for my patients and stand up for their rights and mine ever since I saw her do what was right and earned the admiration of her

The definition of code of ethics is to “safeguard the welfare of clients, also designed to safeguard the public and to guide professionals in their work so that they can provide the best service possible” (Corey, Corey, Corey, & Callanan, 2015, p.8). There are differences among the code of ethics for various professional organizations, but Kocher and Ketih-Spiegel (2008) found a number of similarities that can help aid in making decisions surrounding an ethical dilemma. The similarities found in code of ethics include; “being interested in the welfare of clients, avoiding harm and exploration, acting ethically and responsibility, protecting clients confidentiality and privacy, upholding the integrity of the profession by striving for aspirational practices, and avoiding discrimination in providing services to clients” (p.6). Code of ethics cannot be applied onto each individual due to each client’s situation being unique and calling for a different solution, but the codes are there as a…

To me, this means sincerity in the delivery of customer (or patient) care. Listening with an open mind, being unbiased, and providing quality service no matter the background of the customer. Wanting to be of help for the optimal outcome, not just a mediocre one. In my experience, most coworkers from my previous jobs always worked hard to provide the best customer care.
