1 Background Preparation of medical and nursing students to enter into clinical practice has for a long-time been based on clinical clerkship program; where students are allowed to learn and practice various clinical skills under the supervision of a qualified health practitioner, in their respective clinical fields (Prince et al. 2005; Jalili, Mirzazadeh and Azarpira 2008; Kim & Myung 2014). Importantly, it allows students to develop stable clinical thinking, communication skills, and professional attitude (Kim & Myung 2014). However, data from extensive surveys…

My goal is to provide all learners the support they need to access the curriculum. I truly believe that we have some phenomenal teachers in our district that can mentor others. I think we need to capitalize on the skills in our district. I think that it would engage other teachers to learn from their peers and possibly open the door for them to try something new that they normally wouldn’t. In addition to providing teachers with meaningful professional development to improve their teaching practices, I would like to push the schools in our district to engage more with the community.…

The thing that surprised me the most about the unit I was on yesterday was how busy it was. The nurses on the rehab unit were very busy with about 7-9 patients each. I was able to see how the nurses handled their stress and how they prioritized what to do first when being in an overwhelmed state. My nurse, Michelle was very kind. She allowed me to follow her to all of her patient rooms and pass meds with her.…

During the past year, I have had a chance to volunteer at the Inspira Hospital as a part of the project “I am my patients’ experience”. This project was created with the idea to improve the quality of patient care by introducing volunteers who would concentrate on the emotional well-being of patients and their families and who would advocate for their patients in case of any misunderstanding that might occur in the clinical setting. The experience was informative as I was able to focus on medicine from a perspective of someone who receives care. This helped me identify the areas of disconnect between healthcare delivery and the patient experience.…

During my preoperative experience I noticed many safety checks were in place, not only for the patient, but also for the doctors, nurses, and surgical technicians. Upon entering the room during my perioperative experience, I immediately noticed steps in place that were being utilized to protect everyone within the room. All of the instruments were sterile. Nurses and surgical technicians were counting down to the very last suture to make sure all of the supplies were present. Everything touching the patient or being used during the procedure for the patient was sterile and if the items were accidentally contaminated, then more sterile gloves were put on to preserve the sterile field that had been broken.…
