My Mental Health Practicum Experience

Throughout my practicum experience I had the privilege to observe, participate, and lead many aspects of the mental health processes. I was able to get a better understanding of the processes behind group therapy, case management, assessments, intakes, as well as preventative classes. It all honestly I valued my experiences here more than some of the classes I have taken; because it allowed me to bridge the gap between the classroom and what is really encompassed within the mental health profession. The experience I had at Northern Wyoming Mental Health is one that I am truly grateful to have been a part of and I have them and Sheridan College to thank for that.
All in all I attended more than 60 hours of IOP, sat in on an 8 hour DUI class, observed intake assessments, helped with the case management process, and gathered valued feedback from both my supervisors and fellow coworkers. Early on within this practicum I realized just how much work goes on being the scenes of a mental health facility, and how hard everyone works to keep their clients satisfied. A substance abuse counselor can expect a wide variety of different ways in which they can achieve a job in this profession. Educational requirement range from a high school diploma to a master’s degree, depending on the setting, type of work, state regulations, and level of responsibility. At this time in my life I plan on going for my masters’ degree in Social Work and will decide what to do from there. In order for a person to obtain a job as a substance abuse counselor you must pass a background check, possess a bachelor’s degree in a mental health discipline, and pass the Association of Addiction Professionals NCAC level II exam (Substance Abuse Counseling Certification in
