Essay On My Practicum Experience

My practicum was completed at White’s Restaurant, a local family owned diner, in the charming town of Belmont, North Carolina. The first problem I encountered was the lack of technology with no POS systems, computerized registers, or Excel inventory programs at White’s Restaurant. It began when I needed a business card to turn in even before I began my practicum. Instead of a business card, I turned in a signed restaurant order ticket. Therefore, one of my first tasks during my practicum was to design and order business cards for the restaurant. These business cards made Mr. and Mrs. White, the owners, feel more professional and impressed with my ideas and abilities. However, they were not open to investing any money on POS systems, nor did they believe they had any purpose for it. The next problem that I encountered was interacting with a variety of customers while trying to provide excellent customer service and gaining acceptance. It may not be a modern restaurant with the latest technological advances; however, it is a great place to learn how to deal with customers and provide excellent personable customer service. I enjoyed working at White’s Restaurant, and the White’s were willing to take time to teach me and allow me to experience every aspect of a local Mom and Pop home-style restaurant. The White’s would grant other interns to opportunity to work for them in the fall, spring, and/or summer because they would appreciate the extra help. However, they are getting older, and they are thinking about finally closing or selling the restaurant and retiring; therefore, the opportunity for other interns may not be
