How I Am Different From The Beginning Of High School

Superior Essays
The change between the beginning of high school and the end of high school occurs for everybody, but it truly amazes me how the person I am today contrasts so much from the person I was at the beginning of high school or even the beginning of the semester. Despite the stereotypicality of changing in highschool, I believe I possess something that most students do not, self-realization. This self-realization serves as the fuel for my desire for self-improvement. This self-realization is different than most because I believe I can see my negative qualities and my positive qualities. I, in turn, can then utilize my positive qualities to improve my negative qualities. Throughout my life, I strive to better myself every day, and high school has …show more content…
I concluded that my next volunteer endeavor would have to serve my interest. That’s when I recognized I should volunteer at my local hospital. I went to their website, and found the section for teen volunteers. The site said that teens could volunteer from April until August. It was around February at this time. From coaching, I possessed the confidence to call the director of volunteer services anyways. I left her multiple messages, but received no reply. A week or two later, I was working on an FBLA project at a peer’s house, and I was describing my predicament. His mom just so happened to walk by, and asked me more details about where I was trying to volunteer. She told me that she knew the director of volunteer services personally because they work together at the hospital. She told me she would put in a word for me and by the end of the week the director called me and I was volunteering. Not only was I volunteering, but I was placed in the Teammate Health clinic under Human Resources. This kind of position was only given to the best and most trustworthy volunteers because I would be handling employees’ medical records during my volunteering. This aspect of my life enlightened me on the importance of networking in life. If I had not previously impressed that mom with diligence in FBLA, then she would …show more content…
Even though paperwork doesn’t specifically have a lot to do with science, I realized a key fact through the task. It was extremely tedious, and should have been boring at times, but even though it was tedious, I always looked forward to volunteering. This experience eased my tensions about pursuing a science-related field because I was intimidated by the tediousness of lab work. After happily sorting through daunting amounts of paperwork, I realized that sorting through countless data would be feasible for me. I already had the passion for science, now I understood that I could sort through its tedious aspects. After this volunteer experience, I was able to face and relinquish my fears of the science field. Thus, allowing me to pick my major, pinpoint my talents, and realize what I can utilize to help the world in my everyday

During my internship at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center (STC), I gained more confidence in my decision in eventually pursuing a career in health care, either through being a researcher or a physician. I first started my internship at the University of Maryland STC in my senior year of high school as a requirement for my magnet program. The internship was a volunteer position but we performed basic tasks such as stocking each bay with supplies and saline solution, retrieving blood from the blood bank when needed, and providing blankets and socks for incoming patients. I never paid attention to the importance of these tasks until one specific incident.…

Unlike most students, I would be proud to say that my life is trashed. During my freshmen year, my parents and I decided that I would be able to handle my first job. With all of the potential employment options set in front of me, I had no idea which path to set foot on. Little did I know that choice was never an option; my journey had been predetermined for me. I was set to pick up where my older sister left off, the Jamestown Youth Litter and Conservation Team.…

Volunteering at Veterans Affairs Medical Center was one of the greatest experience I've ever had. Sitting down with the elderly and getting to know them, I noticed if more teens could actually sit down and take the time to talk to an elderly person they could gain an opulent amount of knowledge. Sitting down and getting to talk an innumerable amount of veterans as I could, I was intrigued by how each person had a story of their own going through WWII. Voluntarily, I was able to contribute to the organization by having open conversations with the veterans, providing beverages, and having a great time. It wasn't till the end of the program when my perception began to change about the organization I volunteered for, it's more than just about kids…

Unlike many of my peers, my life story is slightly different. Many of my peers share the story of living in a single parent home, being homeless, violence, and poverty. For me, living in a two parent household means more work because of my desire to receive a full scholarship. Upon my research, I noticed that many of my older peers would receive better college financial opportunities because of their life experiences.…

In Ian Frazier’s essay “In Praise of Margins,” he sees marginal places and activates valuable. The very word marginal to Ian Frazier has a simple meaning of a “negative tinge” (Frazier) where it is defined as actions and decisions that are non-goal oriented, or without purpose. In Frazier’s Own life, a marginal activity and a place for him and his friends were out in the woods as it was there “part-time address, destination, purpose, and excuse” (Frazier). However, growing up Frazier and his friends had the woods as their marginal activity which was often seen by society as unbeneficial. But, from an academic perspective, I agree with Frazier that marginal activates are important.…

Self-doubt began to fester inside of me as soon as I stepped through the front doors. I expected less and less of myself as time went on.…
