My Portfoliotherapy

It seems that as a librarian, I have participated in a somewhat watered down version of bibliotherapy. I had never heard the term before reading the articles. I am always in awe when teachers come to me and ask for books that deal with social topics for use in their classrooms. It seems a book is their first “go to” when addressing difficult issues. I quickly learned to search for books that dealt with topics that would help children cope with the challenges and difficulties of life to add to our collection.
I believe it is our job to guide teachers, counselors and other school personnel in identifying books that will help students in certain situations. This past year, as I have become more familiar with children’s literature, I have worked with the speech therapist, occupational therapist, school psychologist and ELL teacher in searching and choosing literature that will help meet their needs. These staff members are always appreciative and say people rarely think of helping them find resources. I believe it is important that we include these professionals when choosing literature.

The counselor and I work close to take note of books that can be used in her counseling individuals, small groups and in general lessons. At the beginning of the school year, I worked with a teacher to help her class understand a student that is dealing with autism. Diversity in American children’s literature has been a popular topic of intense debate in recent years. Many authors and educators have argued that the genre of children’s literature is severely lacking in diverse and multicultural texts. Others suggest that many positive changes have occurred in the genre, and that children’s literature in the United States represents a wide variety of cultures and backgrounds. In the article “On Being White” by Allie Jane Bruce, the New York City children’s librarian talks about the need for diversity in children’s books across the United States.…

Over the last twenty years, reading in America has drastically changed. The essays, “How to Mark a Book” by Mortimer Alder and “The Joy and Enthusiasm of Reading” by Rick Moody, both address how the use of books changes during your life. I feel that the way Americans read has changed since these essays were written. In today’s technology driven world, reading and interacting with a book does not require “cracking a spine” of a traditional book. Today more and more Americans read “books” on iPads, Kindles, and electronic readers.…

When I was just a little girl, I loved reading fairy tales which brought me to many vicarious thrilling adventures, and when growing up, non-fiction books taught me how to become a good person. Besides that, reading has brought me to many various levels of emotions, such as joy, love, hate, fear, and sorrow. Some stories not only make me feel euphoric with happy endings, but they also make me feel despondent when a character’s deep sorrow touched my heart.…

“Of all passages, coming of age, or reaching adolescence is the purest, in that it is the loneliest. In birth one is not truly conscious; in marriage one has a partner, even death is faced with a life’s experience by one’s side,” said David Van Biema in. Throughout these “coming of age” years, young people are trying to adapt to the world around them while struggling to fit in. Young adult literature often helps students to understand and cope with social issues, pressures, and other problems relevant to their age group. Additionally, these books create an “escape” from reality for the reader.…

“Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counselors, and the most patient of teachers.” -Charles William Elliot I find this quote to be fully true and I learned this important lesson about writing, reading, and literature when I was a freshman in high school, in one of the most feared classes there, Mr. Monsour 's biology class. Not many people are fond of reading and writing, especially as an assignment to be graded by the “destroyer of dreams and grades.” The typical reading and writing assignment seems like it would not have a large impact on a student, but to me it caused a change in heart to reading and literature as well as helped me learn and relearn something about myself.…
