My Physical Therapy Experience

In May of 2012, before even graduating high school, I started the massage program at Denver School of Massage Therapy. I was eager to get through the next seven and a half months, start my career at eight-teen, and continue on to the next chapter of my life. Not even half way through the second quarter in school I got injured. I was working for a dog wash and jumped off no more than three or four large bags of dog food. I ended up tearing the ACL and meniscus in my left knee from a jump that was no more than a foot and a half high. After getting an MRI, the Orthopedic Surgeon informed me the ACL was nearly completely torn and the meniscus almost split in two. I was going to need surgery to repair the damage. On the bright side I applied my knowledge I had just learned in school to my own recovery and the physical therapist was shocked at the amount of mobility my knee had. One month after surgery I was able to walk with a single crutch. After two months I had moved on to walking with a limp. By the third month I was gaining muscle tone with near full mobility. I went back to massage school ready to get through the two and half months I had left to complete. The surgery was by far the hardest thing I had to face during my time in school but no matter what physical or mental stress I was under I overcame it and did what I had to get through it. Working as hard as I did paid off because finishing that program was one of the best things I have ever done. It allowed me to work for two wonderful chiropractors where I have met and helped numerous patients through their traumas and emotional stresses. I know what it’s like to struggle through classes and have to push myself no matter what is standing in my way. I want to be able to help and do more for people than I can with my massage

Each day my two children were becoming more independent in their flights from the “nest” as they boarded the bus and headed off to intermediate school. I was astonished to realize the extent to which my children’s needs had changed on the home front. On the other hand, the family pets appeared to be very adept at taking advantage of this new opportunity to have me at their beck and call for the day. I recognized my need to help others so I responded to a help wanted ad for a physical therapy aide which turned out to be the first leg of my journey into the world of health care and a rewarding career of helping others.…

My success as a student and desire to gain a higher education at Virginia Tech is the result of a devastating spinal injury. During my sophomore year of high school, I fractured my fourth lumbar vertebrae and was placed into a full body, metal brace for nine months. After a series of MRIs and bone scans, my doctor discovered that my spine had experienced multiple microscopic fractures throughout my adolescent years. I spent two years in and out of the hospital constantly tearing ligaments, tendons, tissues, and practically every structure attempting to hold together my limp spine. Up until that point, I had no career goals, no idea what I wanted to do with my life, and the only thing I knew is that I had a passion for anatomy.…
