Reflective Essay: Who Am I Still Do?

Improved Essays
My mother leans very far to the right and I usually wake up in the morning to conservative radio so it’s safe to say that I tend to lean right courtesy of her. But that’s normal, it’s impossible to have a completely neutral opinion in politics, moderacy is possible but even the most moderate of moderates leans a bit more one way than the other. I’ve always considered myself to be a libertarian, and I still do. For this reason I scoffed at this assignment when I’d first heard of it. I already knew what I was and didn’t care where I fell on the political spectrum despite identifying as a libertarian, the views are what matter, why do we need to categorize them? That’s what I thought and what I still think, though I do feel that I can walk away with a better understanding of myself and my beliefs now after completing this assignment. Looking over my responses I’m surprised to see the mixed bag I am presented with. I thought that I would identify more with the right side of the spectrum and can’t deny that it is a bit surprising to see a few leftward leanings added to the mix. But I suppose that makes sense. The definition of libertarian is: a person who maintains the doctrine of free will. This describes my views almost perfectly, as I only oppose free will when it has …show more content…
To my surprise that is a leftward stance, which I will not deny made me cringe when I first realized it. To make my opinion clear, I’m not fond of the United States going out to offer aid to countries all over the world. I am in favor of maintaining our superior military and don’t like the idea of military cutbacks because of this. As a matter of fact, I would be glad if we adopted an isolationist policy and stopped trying to help people overseas that don’t want our help. This, in my mind, is a federally sponsored issue as it involves the safety of the country as a

As I sit in front on my laptop thinking that this assignment should be easy to accomplish, and thus I have been thinking all week about what I should or should not write in this essay. To define who I am is not quite a simple task, however I am sure that my background can explain a lot about the values, and morals I have developed along my twenty seven years of life. As Ralph Waldo Emerson once said “To be yourself in a world that is trying to make you something else is a great accomplishment”, so the question about who I am gives me this great opportunity to distinguish and put into words my true self. Then comes other questions to my mind, such as “am I only a name, profession, values, feelings, education, knowledge?” Do all those words define me?…

Among many moral, religious, and economic beliefs Libertarians believe strongly in the concept of “self-ownership” based on the belief that a person has unequivocal rights to own themselves. The concept of “self-ownership” by Libertarians and the right for a person to do what he or she pleases as long as they do not cause harm to others, while appealing still conflict with today’s society and established government laws on issues such as abortion, assisted suicide, the selling of human body parts or organs, along with many other issues that exist. It can be noted that Libertarian views on issues such as freedom and rights that a person should have are also in other ways established in the views of Liberals and Conservatives, however, adapting Libertarian views into today’s society would mean establishing laws that remove a person completely away from society and functioning as one who choses what he or she will do with their lives. One question that can be asked about this scenario is the concept of “society” itself or communities, and populated areas that make up a country or nation and how all the members involved in those communities should all contribute to the future success or stability of the…

The political language of "left" or "right" is something that is distant to me as I consider myself not that well-versed in the political realm. However, because of my nature I often agree or disagree with some policies based on my personal thoughts. One of the greatest philosopher, Aristotle, famously points out that human beings are "political animals", meaning we are social creature with reasoning. In a sense by our nature, we as individual participate in a manner in which a society is form. Every person has their on set of standard and beliefs.…

Categorizing a political position according to some simple left-right scale of values leaves something to be desired. Political views cover such a wide variety of issues that it is impossible to describe adequately any one person merely by identifying where he sits on a lone horizontal line. Use of the single left-right scale makes impossible a satisfactory description of libertarian (and classical- liberal) attitudes toward government. Libertarians oppose not only government direction of economic affairs, but also government meddling in the personal lives of peaceful people. Does this opposition make libertarians “rightists” (because they promote free enterprise) or “leftists” (because they oppose government meddling in people’s private…

One thing that I always hear about myself is how much of a balanced person I am. At first I thought this had to do with my physical ability to balance and that wasn't it. The balance that I identify with is the ability to balance time and effort between my academics, my athletics, and social life. I find myself doing this better and better every year, as I am faced with more strenuous work loads and more responsibilities in my athletics. The teachers and coaching staff at renbrook have helped me become a lot more independent when it comes to managing my own time.…

The critical analysis examines my personal positions on social and political worldviews in society today. Socially, my views are moderate and politically my views are democratic. Today in society, especially with the presidential candidates in the election this year, it is very easy for me to realize that I have to compromise some of my worldviews in order to respect most of my social and political viewpoints. Throughout time and circumstance my worldview can bend, but overall these are the core beliefs that I always feel incline to follow. Today in society, I would consider myself to be moderate.…

Knowing Your Different My definition of race is that everyone is a being with a heart that has the capability to love, a nervous system that feels pain, a brain that learns hate, and a soul that can be killed. The human being is a marvelous thing where this is concerned, but it can be its own demise. Growing up my life was never the typical little white girl of the sixties world. My mom had me her senior year and her marriage lasted only two years. Being a single mom, her parents had me a lot of the time, while she went to school and worked.…

According to the author, the issue with U.S. politics is how it has been deconstructed from its original purpose. We have begun to treat political disagreements as war rather than facing the chance of commonsense compromise. Perhaps this extreme separation was caused by the definition of certain ideologies in addition to the use of the party system. “…deep philosophical differences aren’t new and that some of the most ideologically charged periods produced important policy advantages… (Article)” This makes sure to recognize that opinion sways between parties due to the direction in which a society is “ideologically charged”, at a given time.…

Identity is becoming a more questionable concept day after day. Some simply embrace it, live their life as such and enjoy it. Some spend the majority of their life wondering and trying to find “who” and “what” they are. Some people adamantly try to move away from who they are. And attempt to change themselves.…

When he reaches this point, P, he is given two options: he can learn about reality and the Matrix by choosing to swallow the red pill (PR) or he can go back to his old life by choosing the blue pill (PB). The libertarians would argue that both these options are equally available for Neo. They imagine the ego hesitating between choosing two specific paths (PR or PB).…
