My Philosophy of Education My philosophy of education was not formed over years and years of profound, philosophical reflection but rather while sipping coffee, sitting in a rocking chair, and mulling over books as I watched the summer sun set behind the Blue Ridge Mountains. From Socrates to Joan Wink, the past four months have been spent vigilantly examining and growing from the philosophies of others. The tables have finally turned, and now without further adieu, it is my turn to share my personal philosophy of education.
Throughout the course of our lives, we ever-undergo a crucial aspect to the human existence – metamorphosis. From the moment we take our first breath to our last dying wish, we are constantly changing, growing, adapting, and maturing. As such, I believe that learning is a necessary component to life. John Dewey (2009) echoes my similar belief, stating:
Our net conclusion is that life is development, and that developing, growing, is life. Translated into its educational equivalents, that means (i) that the educational process has no end beyond itself; it is its own end; and that (ii) the educational process is one of continual reorganizing, reconstructing, transforming (p. 29).
Although it is not always seen this way, learning is an important constituent to human development. It alone is the key to acquiring and honing capabilities, as well as obtaining and expanding knowledge, a principle I acknowledge as being an apprehension of real beliefs…
