My Philosophies As Determinism And Idealism

Answer: Before taking Humanities 210, I would have described my philosophies as determinism and idealism. “Determinism is the philosophical proposition that every event, decision, and action, is casually determined by an unbroken chain of prior occurrences” (Mastin para. 1). I was very focused on the idea that individual ideas were predetermined and that they were meant to be. With idealism, I truly did believe that my thoughts were formed due to my reality. My conscious choice of these philosophies was due to my environment, I had no previous experience studying philosophy.
Once the class had studied the philosophy history notes, I realized that my philosophies needed to change a bit. Instead of being so caught up in the idea that my world

I would also like to talk to those around me and see what their preferences are so I can start listening to it and understand what their interests are and why they listen to those genres. Answer: My art preferences for art before the class and after the class has not changed much because I have always loved photography and paintings. I live with my parents so I will go over my artwork in my bedroom. I have a painting of a cow done in multiple bright colors which I bought because I live in the country and love farm animals, and the bright colors help my mood. I also have a historical painting of the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island because I served on the island as an Honor Scout for 5 years and it was a large part of my life. Lastly, I have 3 photographs of my old horse and I from competitions and my senior photos. These pictures are hanging up because he had to be put down 2 years ago and I want to be able to remember him at all times. My level of conscious choice for all my artwork was extremely high, everything in my room has significant meaning to me. The components of art that attracted me to them was the colors, style, and aesthetically pleasing angles which compliment how a bedroom should be; calming and relaxing. “People argued that if they wanted something that looked like the real thing, why not go to a medium that could better provide it?” (Janaro and Altshuler pg. 127). This helps solidify the memory or moment for the viewer, which is why photography is featured around my room. These are reflected in my philosophy because photographs hold memories and moments, therefore if my reality was formed because of my ideas then if I kept good memories on my wall I would have a better

The video begins us with being introduced to Katharina Grosse in her studio in Berlin, Germany. She is seen photographing a poem by Ernst Jandl for a christmas card, and while she talks about how she’d always loved language, she tells us that the moment she learned about painting a new love began. Katharina points out the strong contrast between poetry and paintings. She discusses how while a poem follows “a certain order system” which makes it quite “linear,” painting possesses a certainly more abstract quality yet is equally as fascinating.…

1 – In his study of abstract art, David Halle sought to answer multiple questions about abstract art, specifically the ownership and opinions pertaining to it. First, Halle looked at who had abstract art in their homes; determining if the ownership of abstract art indicated social class, he then moved on to more subjective questions such as opinions of abstract art. Halle asked questions about who disliked and liked abstract art for a few different reasons; to learn the specific thinking behind these preferences and to learn if these preferences were linked to knowledge or perceptions within different social classes. In addition, Halle sought to refute Pierre Bourdieu’s claim that only people with cultural capital like or understand abstract…

Imagine living in a fantasy world where everything is pitch perfect the way you wanted to be, but then, you wake up to the harsh reality to feel trapped and animated on the inside. This is how I first view my life story for the last three years. At first, I never thought this class would help me realize who I am nor what I have to value until eight weeks ago. To start off, I have looked at my life in a new light and sees how I should understand others before I judge them, as well as, to understand the importance of morals and values. Everyone has their own values and morals that they believe in to determine what is right and wrong in life, so have I. Not everyone can agree to the same stuff about how one’s should live our life, but instead learn from our value and believe to make our own story in our life.…

In his book, Berger states: “[…] unlike memory, photographs do not in themselves preserve meaning. They offer appearances—with all the credibility and gravity we normally lend to appearances—prized away from their meaning” (48). This is important because it shows the distinct discontinuity between a photo, and someone who is viewing it. For example, an outsider viewing my photo may take in the smile on the woman’s face, the food on the table, and the outdoor setting, and simply think that she is out for a nice dinner on the town. However, as the storyteller, I know that the actual narrative tells much more.…

When most people think of a history class they imagine sitting in a dark lecture hall taking notes off a PowerPoint presentation, memorizing a few dates and people, repeating it on the test. Truly studying history, I learned, is more than memorization of a previously told story and accepting it as true. In this class I have learned history is about actively engaging the material, picking apart the details and nuances, creating and using timelines, finding deeper meaning in the material, asking questions, then looking again and digging deeper. It is not a passive study and not about memorization as I believed at the beginning of the semester. History is about asking questions and looking for answers, not just accepting what is already there, but…

Free Will and Determinism have been discussed by philosophers for many years. Free will is associated with moral responsibility, and alternative actions that “could have” been taken over the one chosen. Determinism is the opposite view, and is associated with universal causation, and a lack of free will. Determinists believe that a person’s actions are inevitable, they are dictated by a person’s experiences, they believe nurture, nature, and even a person’s genes determine their future actions. Because of this determinists believe people hold no moral responsibility for their actions.…
