The concept of spirituality is a part of the human experience and encompasses the search for meaning in life. It is a sense that there is a power greater than ourselves and it connects us to each other and other creatures. Spirituality is about seeking a meaningful connection with something bigger than yourself, which can result in positive emotions, such as peace, awe, contentment, gratitude, and acceptance ("Spirituality," n.d.). Philosophically the search for spirituality encompasses asking the questions “Who, what and why are we, what is my purpose and where did I come from?” ("Spirituality," n.d.). According to the American Nurses Association with regard to spirituality in nursing: we believe that “attention to the range of human experiences and responses to health and illness within the physical and social environments” is at the center of all of modern nursing practice. Faith, religion, and spirituality are distinct components of what defines many human communities and allow individuals to make sense of their experiences, including health and illness ("Faith," n.d.). A large part of nursing is spiritual as we are taught to treat the patient holistically which often encompasses their spirituality. Nurses draw on their own spirituality to find compassion for their patients because we draw on the knowledge that God is within all of us. So with that thought in mind for this writer, when feeling tested, draws on God to give her strength via much prayer throughout the day.
