What is Development?
Development is multidimensional concept does not have a single definition (Sumners and Tribe); the interpretation can vary from each individual, politician, international institutions, and development agencies, hence leading to the "complexity and ambiguity" (Thomas 200, p.773) that currently exists in trying to define the term.
For this reason, my personal view of development is a continual process by which countries become more advanced in their economic dimension by improving living standards.
This essay outlines some of the most popular definitions such as analyzing it as an economic process (Willis, 2011), a short-to-medium outcome of desirable objectives (Sumner & Tribe, 2008) and compares and contrasts the different views relating to them. It also expresses some historical developments and how they impact on the current understanding of the concept.

This is the most common measure used by countries. However, recognizing the multidimensional of development there are other indicators such as the Human Development Index (HDI) (Willis,2011). The HDI measures dimensions, income levels, education and life expectancy (United Nations Development Human Development Reports). One positive side of using the HDI in comparison to GDP is that the HDI includes non-economic factors. Therefore, it looks at vital issues which other academics such as Sen view as vital to development. When economic data is compared it can see that the countries with the highest levels of HDI 's and/or GDP are considered in reality to be developed i.e. higher development levels as supported below in Figure
